Thread: Eatn Fuller 9 top 2 tranny

Default Eatn Fuller 9 top 2 tranny

I have an Eaton Fuller 9 top 2 transmission and it's starting to slip occasionally. I only notice it when I'm empty or bobtailing though? My truck has 605k on it. So I guess my question is: what could be wrong? This is an old Werner truck and werner's fleet truck sales website says this tranny can be converted to a 13 (which is what I wanted in the first place) I'm going to call them later this week to see how much $ that runs. I wonder if converting it would fix it? I plan on running this truck into the ground and the Detroit is in excellent condition. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like it may be a clutch issue, if it is "slipping" without any grinding type noises accompanying the slippage.
If you can't shift it smoothly, you shouldn't be driving it.

i was thinkin the same thing... although, i'm confused by the slipping when unloaded/bobtailing anomaly

Now it doesn't matter if I'm loaded or empty it's getting progressively worse. It's happening in 6th and 7th gear now.

How could it be the clutch if my foot isnt even on the pedal?? I don't hear any grinding noises.

Is the clutch properly adjusted? An out of adjustment clutch will slip "when your foot isn't even on the pedal".

Should have about 1 1/2 inches of free travel before resistance is felt when pushing the pedal.

If the pedal is "tight" right from the top, the clutch is out of adjustment and may slip. If that is the case, the slipping is going to get worse and worse and the clutch will soon be destroyed.

As bobh said, I too am puzzled by the bobtail thing, but the fact that it is now also happening in 6th & 7th is probably due to the fact that the clutch is wearing more & more and slipping with less torque than before.

At the rate this problem is progressing, you won't be going anywhere shortly. Get the clutch checked ASAP!

A manual transmission itself cannot "slip" unless it is jumping out of gear, in which case you would certainly be hearing some rather incredible sounds!
If you can't shift it smoothly, you shouldn't be driving it.

thx guys. $30 at the Petro in York, NE saved me a whole lotta $. I was worried that since it was slippin' that it may already be too late but all is good 2 weeks post adjustment. Thx again.
