acceptable viscosity grades for your particular engine should be listed in your engine owner's manualOriginally Posted by allan5oh

Yes, and actually 5w40 synthetics foot the bill better than dino oils. I don't see too many dino oils other than 15w40.Originally Posted by bob h
This is according to the chart supplied by Volvo for the D12 engine.

So basically as long as I meet the API rating(obviously I will) and follow the viscosity guidelines, I shouldn't have a problem?
Do you know anyone that has run rotella T synthetic?
I'm actually going to try out PetroCanada Duron synthetic 5w40, it actually has better #'s than RTS. What I would love is schaeffers 9000, an excellent oil. Incredible shear stability, and it has the best low temp viscosity at -30. Oh well, the duron synthetic is much better then the dino rotella T I'm using now.

yes..., with hd diesels

no

Why don't the engine mfg's use synthetic oils ? Or are they ?
I don't know, but like Bob said, usually they're cost prohibitive because the oils tend to get dirty anyways. Especially with the new EGR engines.Originally Posted by Bobby

extended oil change intervals is about the only force driving syn engine oil, and extending intervals is a very touchy subject

From 12/03 to 12/06 I owned a Class 6 car car hauler with a Cat C7. I know its not quite comparable, but here's my experience. After the first 2 oil changes, I switched to Rotella Synthetic. I was able to extend the changes at least DOUBLE the mileage of dino oil. Once I even got the AmSoil synthetic and was able to near TRIPLE the mileage. Cost of the AmSoil was a bit much, and it had to ordered. You also had to order extra for top-off, cause of course you cant find it anywhere. As far as running cooler or more MPG, it wasn't really noticeable. But for cost effectiveness and less time down for maintenance, you cant beat synthetic.
