oneyedog Welcome! You didn't mention how many miles you have on this engine, but from the sounds of it, you have a case of excessive blowby bigtime. Time for overhaul??

You also neglected to mention what year it was....

The detroit 8.2 was a throw away engine in the opinion of most mechanics with whom I am familiar...consider the cost of a rebuild vs. something else!!!

The 8.2 was one of the worst engines ever but there are a few continuing to run unfortunately, I have one of them. They have many fatal flaws that will take it out of comission forever and support is barely available any more. Do not depend on one for your livelyhood that is for sure. A real downfall is that they turn 3200+ RPM while everything else tachs out at 2500 so if you replace the engine with something better you have to regear the rear at least and possibly any auxiliary equipment the truck may have.

That being said they do tend to smoke an awful lot out the slobber tube. So that part may be normal. The smoking going down the road is not so normal though, normally they run pretty clean (except for the eye-stinging character of the fumes) except for a little black puff if you mash it. They are notorious for coolant leaks in the heads from various sources. My advice is to get rid of it unfortunately. They are old now and they won't get any newer
