Orientation pay.

Ive been looking at several companies trying sort through the junk and find a good one, but it seems to me there are a lot more companies not paying you to set through orientation that generally eats up a whole week. Any one know why that is? Maybe drivers arent worth as much nowadays. Ive all but lost hope on getting a lil bonus. Not that I look at a signon bonus as a means to go with a company. But I sure do look for a company that values my time enough to pay me for it.

Companies typically do it one of two ways.

1. They pay you orientation pay, but your expenses for food, transportation, lodging are on your nickel.

2. They do not pay for orientation, since they do not consider you an employee until you are actually "hired". Most of these companies pick up your tab for meals, transportation, lodging, etc.

There are some companies that toss you a minor stipend and still take care of your expenses, too, but that's usually just a dangled carrot.

I don't necessarily disagree that there should be some sort of orientation pay to cover your time there, but I can also see why most companies don't pay it, since they don't consider you hired until you've been given the keys.

Thanks twilight I guess you are right. about the whole being hired thing. I guess ive just been accustomed to some smaller outfits and some larger ones too throwing you a couple hundered for orientation. always makes for some good money to shoot the pinball if ya can find one

When I got hired at Stevens, they paid for my airplane ticket from El Paso to Dallas, the taxi to the Days Inn, the motel, transportation to and from the terminal, breakfast and lunch plus weekly pay (I forget the amount). I had to fly out to Amarillo to meet up with my trainer so they booked me a flight plus gave me two taxi vouchers, one for the taxi to the airport and the other from the Amarillo airport to the T/A truckstop.

when i was hired at CFI. they would pay for the bus ticket (wichita to dallas), motel, 1 meal and $25/day.

Most decent companies will pay you while u attend orientation.

Crete pays transportation to orientation (I got a rental car), puts you up in a nice hotel for two nights (single occupancy), gets you to and from your hotel, pays for or provides all but one of your meals and pays you $175 for the two days. Not too shabby.

The funny thing is that it true. It's not the best food, or motel stay, though.

But here is a heck of an idea. Do all of the applications, reference checks, drugs screening, and anything else BEFORE committing me to a one week orientation. Anotherwords, HIRE ME before telling I have to go to orientation.

Imainge all of the money saved by NOT wasting time with those that you will reject anyways.

Now, I realize that I'm NOT the first one who would have thought of this....but I still can't figure out why you would waste time with a driver you know your not going to want.

Single occupancy. What a novel idea! Honestly I think putting two strangers together in a room is just plain cheap and a total lack of respect on the part of the company. Seems that the class act companies have enough respect to place you in your own room.
