    Default May Trucking Company

First, I did do a search here, but the word "May" is too short for the search engine and only "trucking company" shows up, so the search was fruitless. Based on what I've read on some other sites, May seems to have a decent reputation, at least one that is better than the Swift, Werner, CR England club. Does anyone HERE have any experiences, good and/or bad about the company that they can share?

I used to drive in their Western 11 fleet out of the Brooks (Salem, OR) yard. I would recommend May Trucking as I thought they were a very good company.

Good: They pay you what they say they will, and do so timely. If a CAT scale receipt wasn't included in a paycheck all it took was a hello to payroll with the receipt and in next weeks paycheck it went (this happened very rarely). The equipment was in good shape (my Pete 379 & Pete 387 were great), and if something needed fixing the shop was very responsive. They'll dispatch you legally, and my DM's did a good job. The yards have parking, the trucks are 13 speeds (I love that!), and the miles were as expected with some weeks being more and others less. They always got me home without ever having to remind them.

Bad: Head lights can't be on if using the cruise control. The trucks are governed like many others these days. Getting empty at night without a pre-planned load (my only real complaint as the others are minor nitpicks....well besides a distributor in Tracy. #$%^).

Again, the company did a good job in my opinion, and if I ever go back into a truck I would definitely be happy going back to them (wouldn't mind trying the 48 state fleet pulling reefers, and then going OO). Hope this helps.

I've only worked for GTI (good company except for one weekend DM, hindsight being 20/20 I should have handled that differently), Arrow (I'll keep this positive and say they had a great orientation. I wish every orientation was as good as that), and May Trucking (good company). May was the only one to have the headlights and cruise control linked. The funny part was I thought there was something wrong with the truck and must have spent 12 miles trying to figure out why the cruise control wouldn't engage or why it cut out. I'm not sure what the official reasoning was for this either. Maybe another driver will know, but heh it was their truck so I drove it the way they wanted.

I started driving out of CDL school with May. I was in their 48 state fleet. I think overall they were a good company. The things that I didn't like was:

    1. Reefer outfit - I can't sleep for crap with that thing going off all hours of the night.
    2. They have an idle policy that if you idle more than the allocate you then they start charging the driver for running the truck. With summer coming to an end, that may not be a huge issue - depends on you (the driver)
    3. The safety department was very nit picky about stuff, IMO. Their job is to make sure the drivers are compliant and safe but some of them took it way too much to the extreem. Again, that's my opinion.

Other than those 3 things, I liked may. Nice equipment and they kept me running.

Thanks for the responses, but another company called today. I do the drug test/physical tomorrow, and if all is well, will be offered a position.

    Voyager,
I'm glad to hear that. Which company will you be driving for? Best of luck to you.

Voyuager if things don't work out with the company that just called you ... you really should check out May .... I pulled reefer ... worked for them 2 yrs. and wasn't ever disappointed - my home Dispatcher was out of Salem, but generally had most tune-ups done in Layton Utah - drove all 48's .... The 3 things that Luzon brought up ... I really think your gonna find that to be the 'normal' with alot of company's out there .... First and foremost .... always stay in GOOD comminutation with your dispatch ... they can make you or break you. Best of Luck .

I'm going with PAM Transport. The idea of charging a driver for idling too much didn't sit too well with me, as well as the fact that they don't do direct deposit. Those, along with a few other things, caused me to look in a different direction.

Hey Steve, for what it's worth when I checked with May a year or 2 ago, the recruiter informed me that they weren't hiring out of Pa. Good luck with Pam, and check your Pm's buddy...

I've seen a few PAM trucks out there and they all looked to be in great shape. Best of luck with them.

P.S. The idling thing is annoying (granted I hate idling and made money off of it, but I understand the objection), but they do deposit your paycheck directly into your account. Just fill out a form during orientation and soon enough your paycheck will be deposited weekly.
