I drive a transfer truck and haul equipment for a small paving/excavating company here in N. California. I'm in no hurry to leave, but I don't want to drive forever either. Owners are easy going and foreman is easy to work for. Pay is ok, benes are expensive, and some of the other perks that we had when I started are becoming few and far between. When the chance arises I want to go back to school and get into a career with future and some type of retirement package.

Sounds like me and you are in the same boat. I dont have any retirement and it sucks. I am trying to get into the local municipal police academy. I have to take all the tests to get in on Nov.7th. If i pass then i will start in Jan. It cost 4,100.00. But in the long run that 4100 will be well worth it.

AIM Dedicated Logistics; Girard,OH. That is what the "Operated By" says on the door of my tractor.
Dedicated to the Clover Hill Foods account in Bridgeville,PA.
Why do I work here? Good pay, good benifits, good equipment, EXCELLENT SAFETY score(27) and nice small company(both AIM and clover Hill. Both are still family owned). 324 drivers nationwide(AIM).

I work for YRC. Formerly Roadway Express driver. I leave my house in the U.P. on Sun. at 23:00 and drive to our terminal in Chicago Hts. Il. When I arrive I am shuttled to a hotel and sleep all day. Usually around 18:00 I receive a two hr. work call and head back home . My week ends usually Sat. morning or sometimes Sat. afternoon depending if I have to make a stop in between and traffic in the windy and I don't always get out on Fri. nite. I'm here because the money is good and the benefits for my family are great. Also I enjoy being home with my family which happens every other day and every weekend. Above all else I am a Proud member of the I.B.T. I've been here 7 years and when my kids are all grown up and on there own the wife and I plan to hit the highway together so that she can see some of the things I used to tell her about over the pay phones 13 years ago when I started driving trk.

I drive for Crete carrier, I run a dedicated account in NY and haul inter warehouse transfer loads. I think I've got it pretty good here I'd like a big fat raise but I'm not complaining about the pay. Been doing this run almost 2 years and been at Crete going on 3. I stay in NY and the warehouse I drop at is very close to my house. Its 50% drop and hook, I unload using a power pallet jack and loads ave about 20k I got a sleeper but don't use it, how much more can I ask for? Oh yeah I don't talk to dispatch for months at a time!!

Good luck on the tests.
With work being dead now for almost two years out of the 3.5 that I've worked here, I've got to find a way to get into something else, because from the looks of things it's going to be a LONG ride before construction is back up to decent level to where workers can make a decent living.

They're not one of the "mega-carriers". Less than 100 trucks. And, they do have loads going everywhere in the country. They are also one of the reasons that the mega-carriers don't come to FL that much. What freight there is coming out of here is handled by the locals like TWISS, and nothing left over for the big boys. The west coast runs are done by the old-time favorites, and teams. The rest of us get the east and mid-west. I'll be in Houston, TX monday morning, then on to San Antonio and Corpus Christi with about 7 stops. Been a few years since I've been to TX, so I don't know what I'll get for return loads from there.
I generally find myself running out to Kansas City, northern Indiana, and Michigan. A few times, I'll get to New Jersey with a run that someone forgot about and HAS TO BE THERE. Don't like that area, though. Too many tolls. Don't do tolls well at all.

I was working for IWX out of Kingman Arizona but left their employ in early August. I have decided to retire for the rest of the year and see if business picks up again after New Years.
I spent more time sitting in the truck than driving it.....

I drive for myself. My speciality is dry van, irregular route OTR. Swift Transportation has provided the truck, freight and routes for 5 and a half years. Swift's customer base and access to freight pretty much assure that I get all the miles I care to run . . last week was 3400, typical is 2400 or so. This year, I've enjoyed about 90 days off, including 24 in Maine, 20 in Oregon and 40+ in places I hardly imagined I'd ever be. I'll make over 50k for the 2ND year in a row, get 3 weeks vacation pay and very good bennies.
My work routine goes like this . . I commit to 3 weeks on the road by providing a zip code where I want to end up. In my case, it changes a lot but for most Drivers it's the home zip. The commitment doesn't mean much because freight moves the truck. It can take as much as 6 weeks to get where I want to go or as little as a few days. I can interrupt my commitment if I find myself in a place I didn't plan to be and meet a good reason to stay. I am told that I earn 1 day off for every week on the road but I have never been held to that standard. As soon as I get a load going to or close to my destination zip, I put in a new one. That way, I get where I want to go, take as much time off as I need and all that time counts toward the next, unreliable, 3 week commitment. This won't work for you home bodies unless you have an extraordinary relationship with your DM.
It isn't likely that I'll change companies anytime soon. While there may be plenty of companies everywhere I go, there are very few that go everywhere I go.

That is one of those names you never ever see....until you read it on an internet forum...then low & behold, there goes a Twiss truck passing you on I-10....in Arizona. A Pete 379 pulling reefer.

You probably see them more than you realize, only now it was brought to your attention.
Now, if you see a Cargo Transport hauling fuel in Arizona, well, that's something you don't see every day.

I work for Smokey Point Distributing(SPD) out of Arlington, WA. Get paid hub mileage, bonus pay on LTL freight, and use a combination of trailers(eg. open flats, steps, stretch, curtain, roll top, etc.) to move legal and OD loads for Boeing. I was running dedicated from Renton, WA to Tucson, AZ(3200 miles a week) with a 48 ft curtain trailer until last Friday when my company was underbidded and we lost the contract.
The truck I drive is 2001 379 Peterbilt with 1.1 million miles, but it seems to be well maintain. Since this company truck is paid off, they don't seems to mind if I take more time off then the 1 day off for 7 days out policy. When I had the dedicated run, I didn't have any time off. But, now I am taking 10 days off(not paid vacation) to visit my family and friends in the SF Bay Area.
Before the dedicated run I enjoyed the long runs West-East. Not crazy about East Coast traffic, but the many miles in between and family in PA/NY/CT made it worth it. I get up to Canada(Ontario) from time to time. Since there are a number of drivers with my company can't/won't go North, I have been moving out of the yard when others were stuck on the load board waiting.
It is a small company. I know most people's first names there, but either forgot or never did learn their last names. The only time I use my truck number is a couple fuel stops we use or when I send a QualComm message to schedule a PM. Pretty easy to talk to anyone in the office or shop about any issue.
This outfit is working well for me. If and when I move on it will be because I am looking some new challenge.
