Forrest Gump was right....and some people literally strive to prove it.....everyday. Strive not to be one of "them".... And "lemmings" are a dime a dozen!

I know I have posted this in another forum but ahh what the HeII its a conway thread.
I have been driving for about 12 years. I lost my almost 70k year driving job in Oct because of the slow economy and a lot of our cutomers closing there doors or layoffs. Anyway for the pass couple of months I have been doing A LOT and I mean A lot or research trying to find the right company! So many companies arent even hiring right now. I never thought I would live to see the day when 7 out of ten companies had "hiring freezes" Anyway After talking with drivers at the truckstops in lodi ohio (yea I made the 35 mile trek a few times just to hang out and talk to drivers from companies I was interested in) What else did I have to do over the past couple months?! Most of the Conway drivers seemed pretty happy. I heard a couple of negative comments but hey your gonna get that. They all pretty much agreed times are slow but everyone is still avg about 2000 miles per week. I know thats not great but in todays times and even givin the amount of trucking companies that are going under or trucks sitting MT in trucking company parking lots, 2000 miles per week is pretty good. The thing that really impressed me is that almost all the drivers stated they are treated with respect at con Way.
There equipment is pretty good. Im kinda spoiled in that I have been driving petes for the last couple of jobs but hey I can handle a KW T600. Its gotta be better then those dang Centurys!!
Im not real excited about being out for 10-14 days in fact I havent been out that long in atleast 8 years. But with the econonmy IM just happy to have a job offer! Both my neighbors left and right side have just lost their jobs and are now looking at the possibilities of losing their homes. So I guess 10-14 days out is better then what they are facing. They are starting me at .36cpm but with safty bonus and I should be around .38 or .39 Im used to making .48cpm with load and unload pay with a dry bulk tanker.
Im sure not all current Conway drivers will agree but I think most will. Im the kinda driver that just does what hes asked to do. I dont complain much and Im always or almost always on time with my delieveries. Im pretty sure Im the kinda driver that can make it any where. I believe trucking is what you make of it! It isnt for everyone and we have alot of negative people out here on the road that wanna blame the companies for everything. Im not one. Doesnt matter what company you go with or what kinda freight you pull your gonna have your days when your gonna sit and make no money. I always tell new drivers dont look at one or two bad weeks and say your company sucks. Look at your yearly gross to date, then deside if your making good money. Heck last year I lost my job begining of Oct and was just under 70k. I remember having a few weeks of bringing home 300-400 bucks and doing alot of sitting. IT JUST HAPPENS!
So at this point and time IM confident that CW is the right move for me. For the newbs out there I also hear they have a pretty good training program.
best of luck to you all!!!

Why work here when you can go to Conway Freight and make .55 cpm and $24.00/hr? And that's for all miles driven and all hours worked...interesting concepts, eh?
Oh yeah, and home everynight and overtime after 8/40.
But I guess living out of a truck for .36 cpm is the better deal.
I worked for conway in SLC for 2 weeks and walked out in disgust. They had an extra board that was so big that there were some guys that hadn't driven in months. They started out at $17 and hour and you had to work the dock all the time. Out of 20 to 30 people at a time were on the dock, less than 7 or 8 were getting 40 hours a week. I would come in and there would be 15 guys in the break room, slouched over loooking their feet depressed. I have never seen more unhappy people. In the 2 weeks I was there they lost 9 people and couldn't have cared less. I know alot of peeps like Con-way and that's their perogative. I don't really care if someone pays well or for everything I do if I go broke waiting to work.
Good luck to you
The safety bonus is a penny when you start, and ticks up very gradually from there (1/4 cent every 125,000 miles). If you have an accident, that quarter gets wiped out and you reset back to a penny. Just so you're not surprised when you get there.
On the Con-way Freight thing, ask the guys in Orlando how much money they made last night. For a pretty good chunk of them, the looks on their faces when they were told to go home suggests that they're not swimming in money.
