Default My new job, is it good?

I have not posted in a long time, but I worked for werner for 10 months. I was 21 yrs old with 0 experience when I signed up with werner. Now I am 22 years old, have all my endorsements and finally had an interview with a local company.

I have been with this company for 3 weeks now, and wow is local different then OTR by so much its not even the same job. I was just curious if this job stacks up with the usual with only 10 months experience being 22 years old.

I get paid 14.00 an hour and work mon-fri. Weekends are off. I also live in Maine so hourly rate varies from other states greatly. I get 2 weeks vacation, and an additional day every 3 months if I do not call out sick. Full benefits, overtime after 40. I drive volvo day cabs with 48 foot trailer with a tuckaway liftgate.

Basically I come in at 6pm, pick up my trailer across the street, its preloaded. Deliver to 4 stores, get done at 10pm, swap trailers at a truck stop with another driver, and just bring the trailer down to their other terminal and drop and hook another trailer back up. I am done at 5am so its a 11 hour a day, 66 hour/week at 14.00 an hour. so approx 900/week.

The 4 stores i deliver to i just pallet jack a skid inside the store so about 15min max per store.

Feels soooo good getting paid 2x of werner minimum have to say. Also I give daycab drivers more credit then I did when OTR.

Edit: Also its an air freight company, so I also had to do some extra paperwork to haul air freight from out of the country and also had to do a bunch of paperwork to haul US mail. This should help me down the road anyway being bonded to haul mail.

    Congrats on your new job...

I might run to the store and get some microwave popcorn and sit back and enjoy this thread. I better get the low sodium with 50% butter

I remember the good old days when we would get the stove top popcorn and the big aluminum ball would form Do they still make those?

How much per hour did think you were making with werner? for living on the road.
CPM is a pay scam that most trucking company's use to get around paying overtime for excessive hours of work and other monitory issues.Get paid hourly and prevent sweat shop conditions.

Every person has their own opinion on how much they should make. It depends on where they live, their lifestyle, etc.

If you're happy with what you're making, then it's a good job. If you think you should be making more, then it's a bad job. If you think you make less than what you're bringing home, then it's a fantastic job.

If I was to find a local job that paid $14/hr + ot where I live, it'd be a fantastic job.

It really does not matter what others think. What matters is what you think. Do you think you are being paid fairly for what you do, and equally if not more important do you like your new job and are you happy with it.

If you can answer yes to those questions then your new job is GREAT!!!!!
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.

So if I read that right for 26 hrs. of those 66 hrs. your getting 21.00/hr which is your OT rate correct? Heck at 22 years old your doing good for yourself. When I was 21 I was out bouncing around the high seas on duty 24/7 getting $400.00/week. Right On man.. The best part is that your home every night. Way to go.

Actually, he's never home at night-- he works 6pm-5am, he gets off in time to grab donuts early in the morning-- get home- get showered and wake his girlfriend/wife up-- play a while-- then sleep. But, he's got them weekends!

Is it the best job in town? No. But it's better than OTR that's for damn sure. And at 22 years old, the world is his oyster.

Beats living out of a stripped-down Heartland truck.

Give the kid some credit. He saw what a dead-end loser job OTR is and got himself a somewhat decent daycab gig after 10 months of being abused by the Big Blue Screw.

    The kid is alright...

From my 35 years of work experience (from factory, to teaching , to construction, to service work, to bedbugging....usually if you have to ask if your job is good.....it probably isn't....The question is, is it better than your last one. If it is, you made a good move, but you still will not be satisfied after awhile. Still look for a better one all the while and be prepared to jump on it when you recognize it.
