    Default cpm decrease?

This may be the wrong forum but it is a general questions about trucking companies across the board, especially the mid to large size companies. Is it just me or does it appear that the cpm has come down for new hires at a lot of companies? Even if you have 5+ years of experience a lot of companies seem to only offer in the low .30's. It seemed to me that even last year a lot of companies were approaching or surpassing the .40 cpm mark. I just wanted some other opinions to make sure I am not seeing things. Keep it safe out there!

With all the trucking companies going out of business, there is a huge driver surplus. It is giving the companies the upper hand, and they are likely taking full advantage of it.

I guess so, didn't think about that. Still a driver shortage supposedly but I guess the existing companies are doing what they can to save a buck or two.

If there were a shortage of drivers pay would be going up.

If Drivers had to stay in driving, you might be right. Otherwise, Texas and Wyoming oil field workers are starting at $17 - 20/hr, with training, insurance, housing allowances and relocation assistance . . plus home every night and weekends off and paid holidays . . off . . plus 401ks and profit sharing and plus, plus plus and plus . . energy is hot! If anyone has been forced off the road, there is no need to look to the road for more of the same uncertainty.

Let's face it . . unless and until Driver's fortunes change, there will be no incentive to stick with driving. Any short term surplus will quickly wash away and the revolving door will keep revolving.
Trucking isn't about trucks; it's about Drivers. Up with Drivers and Up with Pay!

On the other hand . .

There is a second generation movement to go back to a mandatory 55 mph speed limit . .

drive55.org That url is correct but I couldn't get the url button to work . .

I'm not a speed demon and couldn't care less about the number.
However, if it did happen and unless my employer adjusted for the drop, that would spell the end for me as a Driver and I'll be off to Wyoming. Or Texas . . no . . Wyoming . . or Texas . . OK Texas . . no, Wyoming . . probably Wyoming. Maybe Texas. No . . Barbados . .

There's been a surplus for as long as I've been a driver. Almost 12 years and counting....
