    Default Conway driver/rep job ??????

    I tried searching, but didn't really hit on this.

    Anyone with any experience working at a small Conway term doing the driver/rep position?

    We have a tiny new Conway term here in my hometown and they advertise this job all the time. Any details or opinions?

    Depends on where you are on the seniority list. If they are hiring for a regular postion you will get the hours. If it is relief for linehaul you may or may not have work that night, same way for P&D, if the bill count is down they may call you off.

    If you are the low man you are there ti fill in for sick days and vacation that the other guys are taking. Once someone quits, gets fired, retires or dies and you move up a spot you will be better off.

    I just got hired in a class 6 terminal which is their smallest .

    When you're the new guy at Conway CDL stands for "certified dock lizard". They dont have full tiime dock workers they use their drivers. New guys are on call so you'll be sitting by the phone alot. They'll keep you busy in the summer (40-60hrs) but in the winter you may only get 15-25. Off weekends and home everyday. probably start around 18/hr and .40/mi topping out at 23/hr and .55/mi after 5 years. If its a real small terminal it might be hard to move up. The jobs suck a** at the bottom of the board and you could be at the bottom anywhere from 1-5 years. Depends on the terminal. Trucks are plain to the point of ridiculous. No radio or cruise, 7 speed tranny. The older ones are spring ride and dont even have AC, oh but there is a nice fan on top of the dash. Its a good job if you make it long enough to get off the bottom and they dont starve you out first. Only good thing is they hire students. Good place for a young guy just starting out but if you have experience I'd look elsewhere, especially if you have alot of bills.

    I agree on that one, very lonely at the bottom. The local terminal where I live cant keep anyone on the bottom position. A friend of mine went to work for them, the terminal manager made it sound good. He sat by the phone all day waiting for them to call him in to do city (p&d) work, worked some days, didnt work at all some days. Then if they didnt use him in the city, he might get a linehaul run that night depending on the freight volume. He might get 50 hrs one week and 8 hrs the next. Hard way to live if you ask me. It would be worth it if you can hang on till a couple of guys die or retire. My friend had to move on.

    If your a newbie just out of school nows the time to go fill out the application.(at the terminal not online) get in get on the road and when you get 3 months (if they're playing games) you can look at some OTR companies that require only 3mo experience or (if it works out) you will be home every night getting paid hourly. Best Of Luck, I went in friday and filled out the application after talking to the TM on the phone.He's looking to put a new driver on next week. I've called him all winter, he kept saying not hiring,not hiring then I seen the ad in the paper again so I jumped all over it. I hope it works out.

    5 years to top-rate is kinda steep. Industry standard is 2 years at the union LTL's and 3 at the non-unions. Plus they axed their pension awhile back.

    It's a step up from OTR (what isn't?) but there's better deals out there if you know where to look. Stay away from their CFI/Conway Truckload division. Just another low-rent coolie outfit where you'll live on the job for less than .50 cpm.

    Atleast across I80, in PA. In order to be a bonafide Conway driver, you must forget everything but turn a steering wheel, never give an inch to let another driver over, pull out to pass another truck you know youlll never pass, never flash lights to pass, or thank others for flashing for you. Anything else?

    Im sure there are good ones, but I run I80 every single day back and forth from NYC to eastern Ohio, and the ones I come across are very unprofessional. Never had a run in with any one individual, but Id rather run with a Roadway or Yellow b4 a Conway, or for that matter Fed ex. It kinda defeats the purpose when One conway is trying to pass another conway, he knows that he will never be able to pass, and refuses to give a hair just to "keep the peace" with the countless other drivers that he has killed along the way. Thumbs down to the PA I-80 Conway drivers :?

    There is a reason they have the "now hiring" banner permanantly up. Con-Way is the Swift of LTL.

    Turnover is high as they ask more and pay less than other LTLs. In my 26 months at the Reno barn I saw ~150 drivers, 3 dock foremen and 1 terminal manager go through the revolving door.

    Con-Way is a good place to start a driving career. My 1st week there I was earning more that some one who had 10yrs experience would at some of the Coolie carriers like Swift, CRE etc.

    Being the FNG will suck, your hours will be irregular. You might have to work day shift monday, not get a call tuesday and be expected to run at night on a wedensday. The equipment is crap.

    They talk a good game about intregity but management makes up the rules as they go along. A lot of guys got royally hosed when the pension was frozen last year. Now if the company was in trouble I could understand, but they just wanted to take the savings from the freeze to buy CFI.

    If you can stick it out 6-12 months you are qualified for most local jobs. Still you will reach top scale faster if you leave after a year and go across the street to FedEx, any of the YRC companies, etc. From 4-6 months in was working on my exit plan, quietly making contacts around town.

    CAD gets a smaller share of my on-line goof off time now. Last Spring I got into truck and rail photography; so I spend more time on Hanks.

    I miss Steve Booth and his 100yrs flame war.

    To boil down my last post to one sentence:

    Con-Way is the best choice for the bottom rung on the driving career ladder.

    Tried out a New job today picking up recycled (redemption machine) plastic,cans and glass. Its driving and physical and I like it. I haven't heard anything from conway. oh well
