Where did you hear this from ? I drive for Marten and it's news to me. It's the slow time of year period. I don't see any large company like Werner laying off drivers. Large companies with a couple of thousand or more drivers simply don't hire a lot of drivers every week if they want to decrease how many drivers they have. Every week so many drivers leave so they use that to control how many drivers they have on the road. If 40 drivers leave one week maybe they'll only hire 10 the next week to decrease the fleet in response to the available freight.

As far as Marten cutting pay it's untrue. They did start offering per diem recently but it's completely optional. 8) 8)

Per Diem is your daily living expenses, offered as a deduction by the IRS. I believe its about $52 per day for everyday spent away from your home. Some companies are offering their drivers part of the per diem (which is tax free) onto your paycheck each week. They pump up the fact that you can net more money each week to the house. I believe, as others do, that it really benefits the company more than the employee, because it effectively allows the company to reduce your Gross CPM then add on your Tax Free partial per diem to bring your CPM back to the original value. You gain a very small increase in pay because part of your pay is tax free, and the employer gains big because they pay you less per mile.

In todays Grren Bay paper schneider ,s saying they have a drivers shortage . The newspaper is full of lies though. A very loosely written article there talking about 2005 to 2017 driver shortage , slow news day I guess.

There's over 11,000 loads on the load boards. How much do you need.

How much of that is double and triple brokered? I think that it's sad to see the same load posted on 3 or 4 load boards.

It is slow. Where we normally have 200-300 bills, we are down to 140-150 a day.

That means I work less. our freight in our terminal is down 25% compared to last year.

I have a tendency to wonder how much NAFTA is helping us.

If you are seeing the same load 2-3 times. It would make me wonder if they want it basicaly hauled for free.

Deregulation killed this industry. I am glad to see people dont want to haul this crap for free. Companies and O/O need to stand up and not just haul this crappy freight for a tank of fuel. You know what I mean.
If you are not sure you should do it, then don't!

One thing about per diem and I will be done here, You really want to watch the per diem and watch what your employer takes out. If your employer takes too much out you will end up oweing that money back or something I heard about this a while back on one of the sattelite radio trucking programs. (I believe it was dave nemo w. one of his tax men on) Maybe one of the more informed drivers here can expalain it better than I Because it has been a while since I heard it and cant remember all of the details.

As far as freight being slow, is it any suprise that it is slow this time of year?
    On the road again Finally!!!!!

Surprisingly I am having a good month as well but usually Jan. has always been a bad month and Feb. also. December was horrible but sitting a total of 7 days with no pay can do that as Crete pays no sit pay if no freight. 4 days once in Oregon at one time.

Why in the world would somebody sit for 4 days without pay? how do make a living? Man I would quit so fast.
CPM is a pay scam that most trucking company's use to get around paying overtime for excessive hours of work and other monitory issues.Get paid hourly and prevent sweat shop conditions.
