Default DeBoer Transportation and IDC Trucking Company

I have had recuiters from two companys talking with me
    DeBoer and IDC
    Both sounded good upfront

I have to admit I was all jazzed up about going to school Oct 22 back in Appleton WI but today I was trying to get all the unanswered questions answered. Jamie turned me over to another guy and I called him because I could not get my questions answered nor could I get them to send me copies of the contracts I would have to sign when I got back there.

This was the DeBoer part that was important to me.
More than the pay they were advertising.

    This from Layover.com

    Slip Seating: No
    24x7 Dispatch: Yes
    Rider Program: After 30 days
Pet Policy: 1 dog under 50 lbs
    Paid Orientation: Yes
    Orientation # of Days: 3
    Free Training: Yes
    Lease Purchase Available: Yes
Home Time: 10-14 days out for OTR positions
    Unloading Required: Yes
If yes, specify:: 95% not touch freight
    Take Truck Home: Yes

I wanna take my wife some times and my dog all the time.
Today they told me I had to work with them for one year before I can do that.

Also it was to be a free training but they only said this

    Gordon,

It is a 4 week class. We pay for the tuition, transportation to and lodging. You would only be responsible for your meals. We ask that you drive for us for 12 months as a condition of this. You would switch to a WI license and could transfer it to AZ if you would like. Following the school you would enter our training program which would consist of 4-5 weeks out with a trainer. You would receive $250/week for weeks 1 and 2, then $300/week for each additional week. Following that you could expect to gross around $800/week in your own truck to start and around $1000-$1100/week by the end of your first year.

    Thanks!
    Jamie

That all sounds good but I learned that day one after I drive 1900 miles back to Appleton WI I would be signing some papers for paying back 3000 to 4000 or more and I was also told I had to have my CDL Permit before I came and that I would be requested to take another DOT test when I got there. Well I have to take a DOT here to get my CDL Permit.
Why do I have to do it twice.

I think these company's just have ways to make you drop off the tree if they don't really want you do to age or what ever.
Over a month ago I told them the important thing was bringing my wife and dog as soon as I can and nothing was said about the Year Policy.

Moving right along I thought IDC was my next choice as I had been told they would take me and send me to mesalands

Today I called because they told me to call to get more questions answered after receiving my full application and release forms in the mail last thur.

Today it was the same as two other companys, Oh well we are not hireing anybody from your area in AZ wheich is Bullhead City.

Thet knew I lived in Bullhead city the day they called me and first talked to me.

So today I told him the same thing, Full time RV'er here, where do I need to move to for you to hire me.

    GOOD BYE!!!!

I give up. I been spinning my wheels here for two months and not getting anyplace.

I guess I can just contunue fishing and golfing

Maybe buy my own truck and drive it. That is all I wanted to do anyway.

Well, if you are willing to move, have you tried Schneider? Also try Central Refrigerated. They take pets and have 5 or 6 schools. They're a decent starter school and a lot of their drivers seem pretty happy there. If I were you, I would take your RV closer to a major city and you will have MUCH better luck getting offers.

Schneider was company no 2 to come up with that excuse after I told them my age. CRST was first. I told both that I would move to the hireing area. CRST would not even respond then. Schneider told me they hire in CA and Or and if I decided to move, after I got their to check with them to see if I was in the right area. That discussion ended up on the phone and they refused to tell me where I should move to. But kept telling me "Well I guess you don't want to work for us"

AGE DESCRIMINATION is all I can say.

They may have older drivers but non started at age 65.

I lost DeBoer I think was when I treid to get the documents I was going to have to sign after driving 1900 miles to their school. Said they could not provide them to me before hand. What are they hiding anyway.

I was all jazzed up and ran out to get my books and other things to pack my truck.

Still going to take my DOT and after I pass that I am going to take my test to get my Learners Permit. Then I don't know what to do about learning the skills without spending lots of money and then find out they still don't want me. Buy my own truck and bid on loads I guess.

Just Pee-od because I wasted all this time doing online apps to send to these all these companys.

Hay if you don't want an old fart just say so up-front
If you don't want a Black just say so up front

    Thanks

I also spoke with deBoer last month. I spoke with Gerald there. I live in Texas. Get the learners permit here, then tranfers to WI, around $20.00. They will send a bus ticket to Wisconsin. The school is a Fox Valley Technical College, they have a web site you can look up. I understand from another site this is a good school. Cost is around $3900. They (deBoer) provides the room, you are responsible for your meals.

When you pass the school, you will have a WI cdl. If you wish to transfer to your legal address, just do it when your home, cost around another $20.00. (depending on the state.) The way I understood it, you will sign a 1 year contract with the company, there is no money deducted for the school out of your check. Drive for 1 year, and the school is considered paid. 4 weeks out with a trainer. Then you run anywhere as needed for 6 months. Then after 6 months you apply for their regional runs.
I also read from another site, deBoer is a good company. I gave them serious consideration in that they have a north-south run, basically del rio/laredo to WI. Be easier for me to get home.

Your right on the bus ticket. I checked on the schedule and it was 32 stops and 4 transfers with over 9 hrs layover, I asked about driving so I could have a vehicle there and that was ok. They would pay me for my gas if not over the price of the bus ticket.

I thought they were a good up front company but too much was with held from me till i got close and already jumping thru hoops.

Might be just the ticket with you if you don't want to take your dog along.
My Yorkie is more important to me so I will look for a company that works for me.

And a company that will let me see all the contracts I have to sign before I leave home.

Let us all know how your training goes with them. The school has a really nice training program 10 weeks for 1000 or 1100 bucks. But DeBoer gives you only 4 weeks for what you said with a room and then 4/5 weeks with one of their trainers.

I was looking forward to it.

Maybe I should just shoot my dog and then I would not have a problem.

How do you put a picture here?

Again, I would move to a large city near a terminal. The fact on the matter is Bullhead City, AZ in not a very conveniant place and compaies will not hire out of those areas. Reason is the will incur out or route miles to get you home.

AGE DESCRIMINATION is all I can say.

I think you may be over reacting here. Just be patient. Also go over to www.pumkindriver.com and get some advice there.

Welcome to trucking, where distrust among the company and it's drivers run rampant. There are several other companies who won't let you look at the contract before training either.

Harder than you may think. You will have a hard time, if down right impossible, getting everything you need(ie own authority, insurance, permits, etc) and most brokerages will want some experience before doing business with you.

How old did you say you were?
I am 65 and have been around a bit and have started couple company's but mostly internet stuff. retired Computer Specialist and an ex machinist

Not afraid to jump into the unknown and the fact that I enjoy getting that free rocking chair money that would make my truck payment if need be.

Ok, Schneider would not even tell me where I should be relocated to in order to be hired. It was like a game with them. You think I should just move and then call them up and say "Hay I just moved to tim buck two" do you hire from here?

Oh NO, OK I will try another spot then.

This was the last email from them before the phone call.

    Gordon,

The only age requirement is that of the DOT and you must be 21 years old.
We are not discriminating against your age. If fact, we are endorsed by
the AARP for our hiring practices with individuals in your age rage. You
are correct about a hub in your area and seeing trucks, but right now we
have enough drivers to haul the freight we have in that area. This could
change, but for now we are not hiring any drivers in AZ. If you would like
to continue this conversation, please call me directly at 1-800-447-7433
    x6228.

    Valerie Hogue
    Recruiting Specialist West Coast
    Schneider National

She knew I was documenting the email conversation and didn't want to continue it.

I am still building my case before I contact AARP which I am a member and I am documenting all the companys who have changed their hireing area after finding out my age. Three so far.

Call Schneider National up and talk to a different recruiter. Tell them that you are moving to Los Angeles in one week and inquire as to if they will hire you once you move there.

Schneider has always been a company that has gone overboard to comply with EEOC hiring guidelines.

Sorry but you can't prove that to me

They did a number on me and I can prove it.

Maybe there is a age where they stop being nice.

I sent my message to them so they know I am not one to get shoved away lightly.

Now we will see the response

Sure I will tell them I am moving to I 15 and will be at all the truck stops. Which one you want me at.

When I worked for the Govt I uncovered Computer Fraud and put people in jail. To me this is just another assignment.

Take a drive down to Phoenix or Vegas and get a PO Box, one that will forward your mail, and then start listing that on your apps. If you have friends that will let you use their address even better. The bottom line is you live in a crappy location for companies to recruit from. Plain and simple. I know for a fact(friend of mine trying to get hired) that Schneider isn't hiring in Austin. Austin, TX. You know the big state capital located on the Trans Tex I-35 corridor Nafta Superhighway. But no, Schneider ain't hiring. Go figure. That said, every other tom dick and harry trucking company deluges my phone all week.

I live in San Antonio, "Gateway to mexico" and "home of the minimum wage."
Schneider said they will only hire teams from here.

    Ok on that Greg.
I gotta Lighten Up on this anyway and go with the flow.

I have an old friend Bill up in Moussola MT now who has had a TRucking Trailer repair Biz for years. I think he has turned it over to his son LeRoy
Last name Martin, I Went to a big trucking show with him one day and was amazed at all the goodies I saw. Then I said someday I am going to do this and I will. It may just take more effort on my part to do it.

I wonder how much that new deal with the super highway and Nafta will hurt the american truckers or will it do them any good, Did that come about because of Pres Bush's Good friend in Mexico?

Thanks all for your input on this.

$3900.00 for Fox Valley Tech??? Do yourself a favor contact the school yourself and ask for info on the program also ask for housing info or hotels that you can stay at for the 10 week course. Last time I checked into the cost there which was late last year or early this year it was $2000.00 for the course and would not be an additional $2000.00 for rent.

You have access to the internet obviously so check with the school on your own. It's not a CDL mill that caters to one company and if you go there it's accepted by Crete and Gordon along with about any company you'd want to drive for. It's a state run TECH COLLEGE not just a CDL SCHOOL!!!

I called the school two days ago and was transferred to someone who was doing the course that could answer my questions. I left a message and have not heard from them in two days. I was told the course cost little over 1000.00 for 10 weeks and 750.00 for 4 weeks. DeBore could not even give me a course outline but said they touch on most all the same things the school does and they have their own 4 week class at the same school like a partner ship.

Anyway today two ads in local paper. One for Central refrigerated that will provide complete training and has rider and pet policy and Heartland Express that says they opened up a new division here in this area but does not provide training. Guarantee Home Time each weekend. There is a New Heartland truck parks right across the street each weekend but I keep missing the driver so have not been able to talk to him
I have email into each company telling them I am interested and where I live. Did not give my age,

I also have email into Sage Schools up the road in KingMan AZ for info on the school and how to pay for it, or how can you hook me up with Heartland Express and work something out for both of us.
I have not given up by all means.

    Thanks

I believe Heartland requires 1 year of experience.

Central Refer would be a decent company to get started with. They push their lease program, although not as hard as some others, but I know a couple of their drivers and they seem pretty happy there. Nice thing about refer is you can run refer and dry loads, so refer drivers usually don't feel any type of slow down like dry van drivers do.

    Yes you are right Gregg
Heartland requires some exp and I am trying to get them to pay for my training and then pay them back. I like the new program they have out here. Home time every weekend.
Fact the Heartland truck is out there parked now so I guess he had a short run as he left sunday nite late or early Mon morning before I walked my dog

Who are you driving for Gregg?

    Thanks

Well i will ad my opinion...

I graduated fro FVTC (Fox Valley Tech College) in Appleton ,WI back is feb 06

I went to the ten week program... (nov-feb.)

I LOVED it, i drove all different trucks, trannys and everything in between. The instructors are top notch....

The course was $1680 + about $200 for random license & DMV fees

so about $1900 total for 10 weeks.

If you find the right starter company, they will reimburse you for the tuition. +1

Sorry that you don't like the message but that doesn't make it less true. I worked for them for 2 years in dispatch and recruiting and before being allowed to recruit for them I had to attend several classes in Green Bay regarding EEOC laws and compliance. They even had all the recruiters turn in a log of everyone that they spoke to each week. The log contained information regarding the gender and ethnicity of all contacts for that week, totally anonymous, no names. Once they collected all that data that would produce a report as to the percentage of hiring in relation to the percentage of contacts. They would then volunteer this information to the EEOC to show that they were making much more than a good faith effort to uphold fair hiring practices.

Well it is sad to know the system does not work.
They went out of their way to make it impossible to get hired
and I never even got to the point of telling them I didn't have a CDL yet.
Just feeling them out to find out if the descriminate against someone 65 yrs old.

Don't matter, I will get my CDL and I will get my loads.

Also looking into being a Broker but so far they all want exp and want you to come in with a customer base so they can make money off your back.

Yesterday I sent email to two of the recruiters of centrail refrigerated because last week the one I sent to didn't answer. Today I sent it to all 14 of them and 4 emails bounced back but I got 3 replys back and after talking to Amber discussing the age thing I had to bring up, We discussed most everything I had on my list and she said I could start school on Oct 15th but I had to get the On-line App completed.

I submitted the whole online app minutes later.(I am getting good at that part) She sent email telling me she will call in a bit. That was over an hour ago. So we will see. MY DMV is perfect so nothing should hold me back.

They pay for the school and then match my payment back at 25 bucks a week till only 1200 is owed and then they pay that off. The schoolis only 13 miles from my Son's house in Riverside CA

School is 2 1/2 weeks and then 4 weeks with company driver. They pay
425.00 first two weeks and 500.00 last two weeks while out with company driver and then if everything is OK you get my almost new Volvo truck. Seems like a Short School at only 2.5 weeks.

No Pet Policy as the web site says. That ended months ago. They need a web master to update the web site. I can do that too.

    This may work.

Does anybody here know how they are to work for? Their trucks sure look nice and clean but being refrigerated I would think that is a good thing.
