    Default FedEx Driver Apprentice

Can anyone tell me about FedEx's driver apprentice position? Or about driving for FedEx in general? From what I gather, the apprentice job starts out working on the docks and FedEx trains you to pass the road test. Any idea how long it might take to become a full-time driver?

    Thanks

Its a good deal if you can hack it.

I did a similar thing at Con-Way. I hired on in Dec 05 and got my CDL on April 20 of 06. It makes for long days training for 6-7 hrs and then working another 4-6 on the dock.

Yeah, I haven't really heard anything bad about FedEx. I'd definitely like to get on with them. I still have to get my doubles/triples and hazmat endorsements, but I should have those in a week or two. I'm wondering how long I can survive on dock pay, though. I'm assuming it's not near as much as the drivers make.

    Think it's like $10-$12/hr.

Here is what I can tell you about the Fedex Dock to Driver program. I never went through the class but I work for FDX Freight in the west. The class is done 100% in house including the actual DMV test. When you get hired you work the dock and are put on a specific shift with everyone else who is in dock to driver class. This time is based on the class schedule. You will not get paid for going to class but the class is free. You will, of course, get paid to work the dock.

The class isn't a fly by night course. The instructors are tough but fair and they will not pass you at all unless you actually know what you are doing(no freebies). You will be hired on as a full time driver after you pass the test and in order of seniority and qualifications, let me explain. If you get hired off the street and go through the class, and there is a dock worker who had worked for fedex for months waiting for a class to start he would probably get the full time gig first. Now this all depends on how many openings there are at the time as well as other factors.

Once you are hired as a driver you will get all the bennies that go along with it. The Bennies are IMO top notch. In the west we have 8 different health plans that for a single guy will start around 7 bucks a week up to 15 a week for the top plan(cigna PPO open access plus 90/10 $100 deductible per year and flat $20 for an office visit). HMO's and PPO's Dental and vision for 5 more a week. Flexible spending accounts group legal and group auto( i saved over $300 a year and the premiums are deducted by payroll deduction). Monthly bonuses if your service center meets their goal, Pay raises every 6 months up to 22.45. The top rate where I am at is different than other service centers, and it does vary.

I would encourage anyone with the interest and will to go through the program. Good luck and PM if you have any questions.
