Very few companies have their own schools: Prime, Swift, Central Refreigarated, PAM, Watkins and Shepard, and Schneider are the only ones I can think of. A lot of companies offer tution reimubursement if you pay for your own schooling. Go to your local Job and Family Services and see if you can get a grant. If not then I would recommend Watkins and Shepards schooling which is in Montana and they pay for you to get there and Watkins and Shepards has a terminal in Youngstown which would be right down I-80 from Toledo.

Roehl has their own school. They are located in Marshfield, WI. It's hard to find anything negative about them.

The big drawback to Prime's training is that you're on a trainer's truck for close to five months. If I wanted to be on a truck with someone for that long I'd be a team driver.

You can't send a PM until you have made at least 50 posts. This was started to put an end to people sending spam thru to PM system.

I went through Schneider in Green Bay WI. I actually really enjoyed the training. Very little not covered in training. I really enjoyed how I didnt feel rushed. If I was struggling with something either my instructer or another instructer would stay late to help me. Rather it was backing or on the road. With that said over half my class washed out. However they keep that real quite so I have no idea why they washed out. The only one I can speak about is the guy I was rooming with. He came to school with $0 cash, credit. Not to big of a deal seeing that they pay for breakfest and lunch. But dinner was on him. And you have to pay for the license through the state. At least you did when I went through. So just make sure you have some money to cover the license cost and food. When you go out with a trainer you will need even more cash for eating and showers, ect.. Good luck.

Before you get too excited: most 'sound' free but will let you sign a contract which pretty much states you have to drive with/for them for a year and then your training was 'free'. If you were to leave say after 6 months, you will have to pay them an amount which is a year's worth of whatever calculation they use -6 months, so technically it's not free free.

I did my CDL training with Prime; my husband got CDL certifide and he was my trainer. Now since he was already driving for Prime and I came on as 2nd driver my training WAS free because he didn't get paid for training me, which usually they pay trainers for training drivers.
This was also the reason I never had to sign a contract; I was good to go in 2 months time.

Aside from that: if you want to go with Prime do not sign on as a lease operator. Go as a company driver first to see how you like it and until you get to know the industry a little more.
Then personally I wouldn't want a lease ever in my life again, but at least if that's YOUR choice, please learn from everyone else's mistakes and see what goes on in the industry before you throw your life and life savings away.

    Good luck!!

Speaking of Leases, I have never heard anyone say that a lease was such a great idea and they made money doing it.
