the final numbers were a little confusing since they were mixing o/o stats to employee stats ....is the 60000 gross or net that the top drivers made for 36 runs....and is that canadian or us dollars...

That is Canadian dollars.I believe you have to be a Canadian resident to do that kind of work.Hell you can do the same thing in the U.S during the winter.
For about $1000 a day?? I'd like to know more about that position.Originally Posted by steelhauler2007
You do not need to be Canadian to get on the ice road, but the process for an American is the paperwork equivilant of swallowing a pine cone and passing it. The cliffnotes version basically says you will need to pay big $$s for the permits AND a canadian corporation needs to sponsor your employement. Realistically there are plenty of Canadians willing to go so not much incentive for a company to go through the headaches - you would need to be a VERY special driver to get considered.
Also if you pay attention to the show only 125 out of 800 drivers made it to the last week. There were a lot of accidents and injuries - and history has contracts on the drivers so no air time for you - so you really, REALLY need to ask yourself if thats what you want in a job.
If its all about the benjimans then your better going out for the crab fishermen - more profit and no red tape.
I drive local for Schneider, and yesterday morning after finishing my run i ran into Tj down here at the Fontana, CA OC. Hes going through orientation here and moving from Canada down to LA. It was pretty random but hes a cool guy an let me take a picture with him. He said not all that you saw on the show was real, a lot of dramatization.
Wow, that's what I call a pretty random chance meeting right there.Originally Posted by BigAtrukn

I have to agree..it's pre staged, low budget reality TV imo.
No, the Volvo wasn't his truck to begin with so when he moved to LA he had to start over. But he does swear by them now - said repeatedly that he'd rather drive Volvo then anything else.Originally Posted by Hat Rak

its possable to net 60K doing ice road runs.... the bitch is, to run the ice roads you have to be a candian citizen.
US $ can $ its pretty much par... so no need to discuss $$$$
to be eligable for the ice roads, you need a min. of 2 yrs winter experience, and winter experience dont mean driving down a sweet ashfault double lane road, with nice long green grass growing beside it.
up north thiers almost no accidents at all, actually the main road into the diamond fields is about 800 miles long, and last yr thier was about 10 collisions (paint scratches/fender benders) and only 1 injury, ( buddy rolled a truck and got a booboo on his shoulder)

I see a lot of threads, talking about the Ice Truckers. Commercials on TV, too. That's nice, but what about the farmers? Driving their grain trucks in the summer heat. No air conditioner, no power steering. Just that fresh country air. Being out in the heat, trying to do all they can do to make their living.

I grew up, driving a Chevrolet C 50 Viking. These old trucks are still around, and farmers are still using them. You hear, "Chevrolet, the most dependable, longest lasting trucks on the road.." That aint no lie!
:P

He was saying all the money is really made by the owner operators up there. You remember the episode where he had to be flown to the hospital an they said he had to pay for everything and he didn't have insurance? He said that was fake because everyone up there is insured an he didn't pay a dime.
that's exactly what I was thinking. Except 'noobie' or green horn crab fishermen don't get jack unless they did something amazing. But I get enough ice road driving in Colorado to last all year and I wouldn't want to drive over a lake of ice for a couple thousand dollars, that is IF I'm alive long enough to enjoy it.Originally Posted by Bonkers
Honestly, I haven't watched much of the whole series because the narrator just annoys the hell of me. I think 90% of the show is stagged anyways and doesn't truly show how hard it is.
For example: They have a series called Modern Marvels and yesterday it was about trucks stops. They had like a 20 minute segment on the TA and wouldn't you know it, they showed the cleanest TA parking lot that I've ever seen, even the back row was spotless!

I've been watching Merkatt Manor. I think part of it is scripted as well.
Yeah, the health insurance claim sounds a little fishy, since we have a national health care plan up here, although each province and territory admnistiers it differently. It's always possible his home province (Ontario) didn't want to pay for the plane ride but his provincial worker safety plan would have covered it.
What I can't figure out is why a driver from Ontario would feel the need to go to LA for a driving job; there are thousands of good driving jobs here, and it's not that easy for a Canuck to get a Green Card to work in the States, unless you have special skills or education and there is a demonstrable shortage of Americans for the job.
Like another poster said, I'd like to see a picture of this guy uploaded here.
he could of had dual citizenship in the 1st place, or in the 2nd place he could be doing border runs..... if he is constantly running across the borders, and into cali then i understand why he lives there.
the company that im "attached too" lol , normally has runs to mexico and via san diego, and runs north to alberta and across the provences.....
