LTL or OTR??? If LTL, P&D or Linehaul?

I worked for them for 1 year LTL in Winchester VA doing P&D.

I cant speak for OTR but, LTL they were a good company. Not the highest paying LTL out there but, you can make a good living doing it. As far as the work and the requirements, they are the same as most LTL carriers. Of course IMO, they are all the same with different color trucks for the most part. I guess you will be on your way to "Cookevegas" TN here soon huh?

BTW, the only reason I quit is becasue the Dispatcher and management at the Winchester VA location are a bunch of nimrods. Seriously, I have worked for iddiots before but, they were bottom of the barrel at that terminal. Also, I started my own business so, I had to get out of trucking to do it.

BTW, who are you leaving to go to work there?

Talked to some averitt drivers about the TL side of things. Seems most of them think that the TL drivers do a lot of sitting, and then haul a lot of linehaul loads at OTR wages when the linehaul guys are making 20 cents more.

I thought about going to averitt but then i started wondering if a company geared for LTL just has the logistics and infrastructure to haul decent TL freight.

Anyone feel free to set me straight if i am wrong.

How many miles have you gotten your first couple weeks?

Generally, it's going to take a couple weeks to work you into the system, and for them to develop a comfort level.

Let me know. I got a few weeks before I start with them.

Averitt is primarily a tl company not an ltl company. Also don't forget that they pay hhg not practical. Years ago they were quite good but now they are just average. I've talked to too many drivers who complain about the lack of miles. We have several former Averitt drivers over here at Crete. Keep in mind also that if you work in the Upper Midwest you are going to go to Canada quite often.

Are you willing to die to take them away from me?

Well keep me posted on the mileage. I have a few weeks before I go to get programmed.

Are the health benefits as inexpensive as advertised. My understanding is thrity bucks a week for family coverage. I know there is a waiting period.

Give it some time, takes a good month or 2 to start getting miles. Also, talk to your dispatcher. Let him know this isn't working out because the lack of miles and too much sitting. Give them a time frame to get this working for you or your going to look for another job. If they know they have a good driver they are not going to let him starve.

What a friggin joke! I wouldn't even consider pulling for a cheap-***** company like that.

DAVERUT - any mileage updates? Things getting any better, or are you still advising against Averitt. I am scheduled for orientation on 7/23 - a mileage update would be appreciated.

I talk to a driver down here in Cookville, Tn whos been driving for them for 5 years and hes thinking of leaving them. He told me they started a program on sleep apnea and if you test positive for it you have to pay to have some kinda machine put in your rig which is 500-600 dollars which comes outa your pay little by little. He also told me they have a lot of grocery warehouse loads, and it will take a long time to get a dedicated or ltl position. He said they were hiring to many drivers also. He was very negative about them. But its hard to talk to an Averitt driver on the cb, I seen this guy stopped and just pulled off the road to speak to him. Seems Averitt aint as good as id thought they be. Oh and by the way he said here in Cookville Averitt is the big dog theyve had pull power at keeping other trucking companies out of this area. They put a lot of money into the community here . Sounds a little shady but look at the trucking industry now. What once was a descent brotherhood is a cut throat industry.

I was with Averitt for about 6 months and it wasn't a bad company. I have 2 friends that worked for Averitt. One left a few weeks ago because lack of miles and my other friend transferred to local with Averitt. He was getting miles but then an opening occurred and took it. I left because I wanted an office job and steady hours and keep thinking about going back but very unsure what to do. You are going to get mixed reaction about the company and for me I did like them.

well last week got about 1000mi. this cumming wk or next will be my last.
i've gotten about 7500 mi in the 5 weeks i've been there, every averitt driver i talk to is leaving or thinking real hard about leaving. NON were happy. They just keep hiring, they can't run the drivers they got.
I just can't pay my bills on 400bucks a week, don't know about the rest of ya!!!+ i'm not staying away from home for a crap-e 400$ a week
IF U LIKE SETTING ALL THE TIME THEN AVERITT IS THE RIGHT PLACE TO GO

No miles seems to be the consensus. Looks like I won't be going to Cookeville. Luckily I still have USF, Roehl, and Celadon on the hook for orientation on Monday
