Default Called a few companies.....can't believe

Quit OTR in Oct '06 to deal with wife's serious health issue...doing ok now so going to go back OTR, thought I would call some companies before just going back to my old company of 8 yrs.

Very disappointed, found this about some companies:

We don't pay for scale tickets

We don't pay for trailer wash outs---large reefer company

We don't pay for Ohio toll road.

    We don't pay for lumpers

Also called the highly recommended Crete from the forum and was told by the recruiter that I can have 5 DAYS of vacation after a year, not a week but 5 DAYS and it includes weekends.......gotta be kidding. Either she was an idiot or this is not a very family friendly company....I don't care how much they pay.

Going to call some more tomorrow just to see what I am told....it is getting funny now.

So I guess it is back to the old company....did not know how happy and spoiled I was !!!!!!!

Yes, it's five days paid vacation after one year of continuous employment. However, Crete doesn't rule with an iron fist and all you have to do is ask your terminal manager if you can take a couple additional unpaid days off.

Just out of curiosity, who is "the old company". I've just gotta know.

    FlybyNight:

Missing the point, a weeks vacation is not 5 days, it is a week. Spend a year ridin' and guide'n and get 5 days. You can't even go on a decent vacation, family is a hell of alot more important than that. Not willing to see if some manager is going to give a couple of extra days.

Old company is KLLM, made 68K in '05. Took off 1 week for kidney stones, 2 weeks for hurricane and 3 weeks vacation. Either run 3 wks and take 4-6 days or run 6 wks and take off 6-8 days. They are alot more driver/family friendly when it comes to time off. In fact their policy is" frequent home time"..work with each driver as some take hardly anytime and others need / want more.

Why don't you go back to KLLM? Either way, I don't know how or why you married guys do it.

Sounds like the OP is looking for part time work. Several companies offer the time off you're looking for. KLLM use to be owned in part buy that clown from Enron. Given that I pass them on a regular basis, personally I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole. But to each their own I guess.

I don't get paid for scale tickets, truck/trailer washes etc

What you FAILED to mention is how much they pay (compensation), in which case you could come out WAYYYYY ahead, despite expenses.

I've deadheaded 450 miles for free before, it was what was waiting for me at the other end that makes up for it.

I pay for my own lumpers too

Hes not a O/O, hes a company driver. Scale weights should be paid by company, as well as lumpers or I wouldn't work there. If they want to pay any out of route miles then stay off the toll roads. Anything that has to do with their truck, they can pay for.

    Amen to that.
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.

OK. I must be missing something.

How is being gone 3 - 6 weeks considered "frequent home time"?

How is being gone 3 - 6 weeks "family friendly"?

Family is too important to just get 5 days vacation, but not important enough for you to be home with them more than every 3rd week?

I drive for an O/O leased on with OIX. I made plenty last year, with 3 weeks paid vacation and full benefits. Home every 7-10 days with 2 days off and lots of flexibility. Now this didn't happen over night and not all O/O are the same. Takes some intelligent negotiation at times to get what you want. There's a lot of companies I see mentioned on this board that I wouldn't want any part of, but I've been on the road for almost 20 years.

People bitch about Stevens but at least they paid for all of those when I drove for them.
You can take the driver out of the truck but you cant take the truck out of the driver.

Never have understood why someone would drive for an O/O. Typically they do not have benefits of the companies like 401k, health ins that is affordable, and all of the benefits that they offer.

Heck driving for an O/O is like having one foot in the coffin, might as well go ahead and buy that large car for yourself. At least you get to go fast.

Seriously, if you are happy that is all that counts.

You can't understand why someone would drive for an O/O but you would drive for KLLM? I have all the benefits that most major companies offer including 401k. Does KLLM give you a choice of loads and no forced dispatch? I run where I want when I want. Sure I could buy my own truck, but it wouldn't make much sense given I clear almost as much as an O/O without the headaches.

Keep your eye open for that better than KLLM job. Gonna be hard to beat a company like that.

An O/O with a 401K......I am getting out the hip waders now it is getting deep. Sounds more like a lease operator, I put O/O's in high regard, those folks have the courage to have their own authority and their own customers.

What movtivates someone to go buy a 100k plus truck, and LEASE it to a company for 90 cents a mile and not make anything but drivers' wages at the end of the year. Hell, most of the O/O's out there are riding around on tires so slick they look like a nascar tire and are bumming a cig off a company driver at the dock to boot.
