I'm catching this quote really late, but I'll chime in anyway.

I found this comment very, very striking. "It's just rough not having enough money to save for his college and pay bills at the same time."

That makes me sad somehow. I've been trucking 10 years, and my kids are on their own figuring out how to get to college. I can't remotely afford it over and above paying my own bills, many of which I struggled with for 13 years after college myself.

All that money so I could grow up to drive a truck to pay off all that money.

    College was a gyp.

Past 2 days we have had a few things go on.

Recruiters for Swift, Werner and GTI came in these past few days..

I still thing that Swift sounds good, But..... from what I have heard here I will stay away. Again unless it's flat bed but I cant touch them until I finish with the mentor.

Werner's paperless log system and new trucks sounded great. I've also received a pre-hire notice from them. training in Fontana, CA. The CNA ( CA, NV, AZ) regional spot sounds good to me.

GTI sounded real good until he told us that we had to make sure the truck was spotless. I asked the recruiter who paid for the truck washes. He told us the driver is responsible. The recruiter tried to through out that the dispatchers will sometimes give out a free truck wash to the driver. I said thanks... after the recruiter left we had a 10 min discussion as to why should the driver have to pay for a truck wash that from what I was told was close to 50-70bucks? Anybody care to venture where I heard to ask this question? ..... from this board....

I have been speaking to Davis Transport, no thanks to Goin Fer it's very informative thread... They are willing to pick me up from what the recruiter up there has told me. She has called a few times now making sure I'm still interested and if I have any questions. I did the online app with them but she's sending a paper app to the house along with more info for me and the wife. I'm leary about them just because I haven't seen a truck down here in SoCal.

Watkins Shepard has contacted my school and is asking for an update/transcripts. I will be doing a telephone interview in the next day or two. Still interested but 10 days training... will I be ready??? :?

All in All.... Its nice to be wanted... I'm still looking to find a Chemical Tanker Co. to speak with. Anyone knowing of one that will take a student grad let me know please...

    Cyanide? SleepWalker? anyone....anyone......

I took and passed my endorsements... I have doubles/triples (missed 1) , Air breaks (missed 1). Haz-Mat (missed 0) will be put on my CDL when my background comes back.

    Thanks,

If you're moving to MT and want to be home regularly, Watkins Shepard will get you there. More than any other company. If you're confident in your ability to handle a truck (after CDL school) the 10 day orientation will work for you, some people prefer to have a trainer with them for longer periods, BTW W/S does offer an in-house 30 day CDL school.
Feel free to PM me with any specific questions about this company.

dewercs2 I just graduated from school and am pulling a tanker for a company called Florida Rock delivering lube oil in the South East reigon. The main reason I choose this company is because after a year I can go to there gas division and be at home every night. I probally had more options than you because the State paid my tuition and I only had to come out of pocket with $300. My advice to you is to go into the yellow pages and start cold calling theese companys and see what there hiring requirments are. I am only out 2 ort 3 nights a week. I was in a 6 week training orgram with them and was getting paid $600 a week while in training.
