I heard good and bad about Swift I know their starting pay is not the greatest, but if they keep you busy wouldn't that be better than making 45 cpm for someone else but waiting on loads half the time??

there is nothing wrong with swift, they are just like every other large company so people do good with them others cant stand them
I made it through their school the 6 weeks with the trainer it was great got my own truck and was getting little short crappy runs. Maybe because I was a newbie but i thinks thats how they work. Not a bad company to get your experience with but for the long haul I would go somewhere different. Some peole Like it some people dont
The day I stop thinking about safety is the last day I have of being safe.
I've talked to recruiter and they have new pay system and bonus after 1st delivered load on time after going solo. Keep an eye out for BigBird01 posting he's with swift. Btw i'm going to orientation on Jan 3, in Syracuse,NY.
I'm not tailgating, I'm just drafting. " Go Dale Go".
Swift does bill itself as a short to medium haul carrier with the average length of haul being under 500 miles.and was getting little short crappy runs.
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.
Swift works this way with miles, lease teams first, lease solos second, trainers third and solo compny driver's get the leftovers(short trips and lots of time in the terminal in phoenix....lol) You have to yell loud to get your miles. :x
My pattern with Swift has been 1 short run, say < 200 miles, then one run 800 miles or greater. Last week I had two 1100 mile trips, one for like 50, and one for 150.
If the trip is less than 100 they pay you .42/mile + $25.00.
I would echo what others have said and say that, if nothing else, you could certainly do worse than working for Swift your first year. Yeah, the money is not the greatest, but the equipment is nice, the training is good (or at least on par with Schneider, my only other point of reference), the people are nice and safety is stressed.
Just mho, but the first year of trucking is your dues-paying-year. I'm just doing what I have to do to be in a position where I have more leverage. But overall I like Swift.
It could be worse, you could get stuck at the Fontana terminal. I took a shower there once and felt even dirtier afterwards. Swift should be ashamed of the conditions there.Originally Posted by jnk2001
In contrast, most of their terminals are at least acceptable and reasonably clean. The one in Edwardsville KS is totally awesome.
well this is just my opinion... but they suck donkey ass... so does C.R england... god i hate those two companies..
I'm in P260 in phoenix right now, we're goin on the road on monday. So far I love it. I got lucky and got a good recruiter and everythings been exactly as i was told.
So far I have no complaints at all.

Keep the rubber side down on the hard stuff.
Ya know what? It is all what you make it. Look at this as a stepping stone. Learn all that you can, and do not be afraid to ask for help. I wish that some of you new guys would just say hey out here on the road.Originally Posted by Krzysztof

VERY CHEAP COMPANY THEY PAY PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR THEY HIRE MOSTLY OLD MEN THERE BUSTED UP TRUCK DRIVERS

It is this type of attitude that hurts us all out here.
I run across allot of punks out here, you just confirmed that.
Name your company, they all have their good and bad. If you are new to trucking, Swift ain't that bad. In fact, I find their drivers to be some of the most considerate drivers on the road.
And having spoken to a few out here, they know the score.
Like I said, this job is what you make it, no matter who you drive for. And it is not an occupation that many can do, or are willing to do, for any amount of money.
And the money, it will come with time and experience. And Swift is a good place to start for many drivers. They do have the freight, it just takes the right attitude to get it.

This sounds like the guy you'd hear on the CB all the time... :!: When I started with them about 10 yrs ago, it was so bad, I'd just leave my CB off. Seems like it was a lot of MS driver's...lol (how the fates have turned...lol)...My dispatcher was a jr=erk, so I didn't stay very long. They probably have changed alot since then. hopefully...BOL
out of the big training companies I always thought Werner had the best equipment and selection of trucks

They do, but the pay stinks. Especially the regional fleets. Most drivers with Werner (myself included) like the company overall, but many are leaving because the pay has not increased to be competitive with the rates other companies are paying. I've been with them about 1 year and 4 months so far and I'm thinking of leaving too. I have a few hurdles making things tougher though (2 minor preventables I acquired in my first 3 months, and a major car accident that occurred over 2 years ago before I had a CDL). I wanted to go work for CFI, but they changed their mind just before I was going out for my road test during their orientation. I ended up going back with Werner. :/Originally Posted by classicxl
The pay is still a bit low but they've made some good strides in their new pay plan. It looks like they've started a plan to give 5 incremental raises during the first year. Plus, a $500 bonus after your first load. It looks like thay're trying to make things better for the new drivers.Originally Posted by randabis
Werner's pay has always been low and will always be low. But, that is not their only problem. They do not give their drivers any miles especially on the regional fleets. I was only getting around 1250 miles per week. I never turned down any loads and I was always on time. My dispatcher and I got along great but still never got any miles.
i am getting about 3000 miles a week with werner, only problem i have with them is their shasty pay, but that's my only problem with them. oh and their weekend dispatch are about as usefull as a Rubber Crutch.
