I dont know how OD works, but most LTL cos. run you wild/float till you get enough seniority to get a bid run- wich is what you are asking about. Most bid runs have you home at least once during the week, if not every night...
We don't have any Wild Runs as far as I know in Con-Way western. The only time you have to lay down in a hotel is equipment breakdown or the road closing due to weather or accidents.
Out here OD drivers are not paid for the 1st 4 hrs of delay and then get something like $5/hr after than.

Ian, are you serious? 4hr b4 delay pay, and 5 bucks an hour after ? Surely you kid ! :?:
"It's Always Rainin' In My Head"
I dont get a thing for delays...but I get paid very well by the mile...
if it is like other LTL's, the runs are bid out by seniority. They proably have several good quick turns, (home daily), but more thanlikely you will not see one for a couple of years. I prefer an overnight run myself, I am gone 2 nights a week, but that gives me 2 days a weeek to do nothing but get my rest. When I had a fast turn, I tried to do to much at the house, and was always really tired. Plus on my laydown run, i get in so early I am home in bed before Atlanta traffic even thinks of getting started. We get $20/hr for delay after the first hour. Better than nothing, but you have to give them the first hour, and miraculously you always get your bills at 58 minutes late.
I'll be damned. Sounds like a raw deal no matter how you slice it.Originally Posted by Ian Williams
bids are selected by senority, just depends on the terminal. you might get hired on as a wild driver, then 18 months later they may hire someone and they get a turn. basically you're at the mercy of those that are already there.Originally Posted by DRIVERMAN77077
LINEHAUL IS LIFE.
I heard it second hand last Sat morning.
Several of out guys ran out of hours coming back from the break-bulk in Sacramento due to chain controls. Since we don't have dock workers we are frequently low on hours coming home. When we're busy and/or short handed it makes for long days. For the entire month of August I worked 5-7hrs of outbound dock (my bid) and then did a turn and burn to Sacramento.
At CWX as soon as the wheels stop moving you are on the clock for "Enroute Delay" or "Breakdown".
One of the new guys was griping about having to sit and wait for ~ 3 hrs until management could find someone to drive their equipment in from Truckee. On of our line drivers who had been around awhile mentioned that he was talking to an OD driver on the CD and that they are not paid until the 5th hr. and then get $5/hr.
One of the OD drivers on here should be along soon enough to set the record straight.

Ok, you got an OD line haul driver here and been with them since July this year. I can give you what I know.
At my terminal we have drivers called "wild turn drivers." This means you go out every night and should end your 14 hr shift back at your home terminal. It is not a scheduled run. You drive to whatever OD terminal that the freight needs to go to within reasonable distance. I start my week on Monday night and drive till Friday night/Saturday morning. Unless I run out of hours on the road due to delay I am home every night/day."DOES OD HAVE LINE HAUL RUNS THAT TURN EVERY NIGHT DOES A NEW DRIVER HAVE A CHANCE AT GETTING A RUN THAT TURNS EVERY NIGHT OR DO YOU HAVE TO RUN WILD FIRST THEN GET A RUN THAT TURNS???"
They also have drivers who drive "bag runs." These guys pack a bag and go out and drive for several days to several weeks before coming back home. Depends on how long they want to stay out and how much freight needs to be moved. The bag runners at our terminal generally stay out 2 weeks at a time.
Each terminal appears to be a little different and hires based on their need. My terminal hired me as a wild turns driver right out of school and I am home every day. But I spoke to another OD driver from another terminal and they make the new drivers start out on bag runs and then move up to wild turns. I guess it depends on what the terminal needs. Best thing to do is call the terminal local to you and see what they are hiring for and if that fits your needs.
Correct. If you get delayed at a terminal waiting on freight you wait 4 hrs before getting anything. I have not had to wait that long but have talked to other OD drivers who did. Some terminals are better at moving you faster than others."Out here OD drivers are not paid for the 1st 4 hrs of delay and then get something like $5/hr after than."
Hope this helps.
4 hours of FREE time ?? BOGUS ! And then below minimum wage after that ? And I thought the former Overnite was bad...Drivers right out of school pulling sets ? No wonder I see so many of them in the wrong lane, complete with fog lights on. I thought OD was better than that.

The trucking industry believes they can get away with a complete and total disregard of a worker's time. And as long as drivers continue to suck it up and play the fool, things will never change.
It's the absolute pits in OTR. You give em' two free hours at every dock you bump. You don't get paid all the miles you drive. You scale their load for free, fuel their truck for free, and babysit their equipment for nothing during traffic jams, PM's, and breakdowns. Dropping\hooking trailers, inspections, load securement...the list goes on and on in that end of the biz. Why? For whatever reason do drivers put up with being the garbageman? So they can tool around in a fancy rooster crusier? Because "that's truckin?". Sorry, I'll pass. I ain't out there for stetson hats, big radios, or chrome.
Looks like LTL is starting down that road now, too. Oh well. I'm lucky enough where I make a good buck in this biz for every hour I clock in on the job. And as long as I can continue to do so, I'll keep on truckin', I suppose. But if the day ever comes where some bean-counter in management wants me to sit around for free, then that's when I'll hang up my spurs for good. All good things must come to an end, right?
I do know that you don't get paid until 4hrs is up in delay time, not sure what the pay is thou, never happened to me yet.
We do get paid for hooks thou, so if you get 4 hooks and 4 drops in a trip a day and do that 5 days a week thats an extra 60 bucks.
Old Dominion not that bad of a company, they have treated me pretty well, and have paid me better than the OTR companies have. I am basically a wild driver, don't really mind it to much, really can't stand dedicated runs, to boring, same road, same scenery, it just bores me to death after awhile. I usually go out Sunday an return home on Friday or Saturday morning.
So that's a buck and half to drop and hook ? Correct me if I'm wrong..As for the other reply, NO I don't hold back. I firmly believe that NO-ONE especially the people who keep this nation in food, fuel and the very clothing on their backs should work for FREE. I get paid by the hour for everything and so should all driver's. Optimistic ? sure. Do I think it will happen ? Maybe not. But if drivers as a whole would refuse to give away their time, maybe it would start. Companies only exploit those that they know will take it. We would all be better off if the "freebies" stopped. We also need the trucking industry's exemption from the Fair Labor and Standards Act repealed. The legal slavery has got to stop somewhere.

I'd always heard that O/D was a very good outfit to drive for!! NO????
Con-Way also starts new guys in line haul. After a week of training you go to the bottom of the extra board.
Here in Reno that means you could be going over Donner solo in winter on your 6th day of work. Last February a guy who was 2 or 3 weeks out of the in-house training jack knifed his set coming down the grade between Boreal and Truckee on 80.

was he fired
Thats weird, when I'm delayed Im paid my hourly rate... I must work for a different OD then...?
I have never seen a new hire run linehaul right out of the gate. Not saying it doesnt happen, but in most cases it would be:
A wild run that no current linehual driver wants, and no P&D driver wants to switch to
The wild drivers make some serious money however... But we have runs that are home nightly that pay 640 miles.. and top pay is .48 right now (low for the industly however....)... But at the end of the week... you are pretty much baked, and need both of your days off to recover.
You can do a LOT worse than OD, overall Im very happy where im at... Although by no means do I plan on retireing as a truck driver... it'll do for now.
Its just my personal opinion, but I think that there will be only 3 ltl companies on the road in the not too distant future.
