Default Question Re:Religious beliefs for new grad looking for work

Looking for work. 1st, I cannot work Friday @ sundown until Saturday @ sundown. My wife and I are Jewish. I do not need to be home. I called 33 companies last week, 2 of them said they could work around my religious beliefs.
HAS ANY ONE RUN INTO THIS PROBLEM AT ALL?

I understand forced dispatch and all. I have never been in an accident and haven't had a speeding ticket in over 4 years. No DUI or OUI. Just want to work 6 days a week. That is all. OTR/48 states...My wife will be getting her CDL in a few months and we want to TEAM together.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated. OH yeah, we live in Metro Detroit.

    GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It can be difficult for a company to work around religious needs. Sometimes you don't get loaded until late Friday or even Friday evening. Even those carrier's who say that they will work with you, may not always be able to accommodate you. Most of the better freight companies will try to get you loaded on Friday for a Monday delivery. If you can run over the weekend, you will dramatically improve your income. It doesn't mean that you will necessarily need to run all weekend, but you could leave out Sunday and be at your destination on Monday morning. Good luck.

    Default Religious Beliefs/Driving

"they could work around my religious beliefs" Get that in WRITING from any company that will invite you to orientation before you go to that orientation. I doubt they'll be able to abide by their assurance. Teaming being available six days out of seven is counterintuitive. BOL

Im sorry to say that this business is not exactly 9-5 and M-F, schedules will be wierd sometimes, so dont expect for that to work out with your sabbath off...unless you run hard enough during the week to where you have close to 70 hrs by fri night and needing a 34 restart, but that will be unlikely to work out too well....I do know that McElroy out of Alabama has a policy to give Saturday off....Find a co. to give you sat off...GL
When you are your own boss, you can make your own schedule...

    joshnareta,

No guarantees but here are a couple of ideas. I work for Old Dominion doing linehaul. At least our local terminal is pretty laid back and will work with you on a schedule. You may want to check them out. Also, just a rumor I heard, was the company that pulls Little Debbie Snack Cakes has a policy of being shut down on Saturday due to religious beliefs. Cant remember the company name off hand but thing it's McGee or something like that.

    Hope it helps.

    Try this link for McKee:
    http://www.mckeefoods.com/careers/HR...View.aspxcgee:

You'll have a tough time trying to find a company to accomodate your request. I'd try some linehaul companies, but most require experience.
(Old Dominion, SAIA, Yellow, Roadway, Con-way, etc.)

I got onto Old Dominion as a student and in most cases they will consider you just coming out of school. That is unless that particular terminal has enough drivers and may ask for experience.

If you manage your hours of service properly you can always shut down for your 34 hour reset on the same day every week. Especially as a team with a 12 on 12 off schedule you will always be able to shut down on the 7th day, whichever day it is.

The hours of service are your friend in this case, just make sure that you play with the nubers a little to make sure that you don't run out of hours early.

If you request to be home for the weekend it may be difficult if you run out of hours friday evening, you may have to request hometime for other than weekends.

Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
    Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

    Default info on sabbaths off

Thanks for the info. Positive and negative....I realize this is not a mon-friday/9-5 job...I probably will own my own truck someday, this way I can set my own schedule. I need to start somewhere though and I can't afford a truck right now.

Im sorry to say but that may be a difficult one to do given what Ive seen thus far in this line of work. Years ago, I worked for wally world and their most of the overnight maintence crew was a religion that said they could not bathe for a month. I dont know what religion it was because I wouldnt get close enough to ask them and they barely spoke ennnnglish. ahhhh the good ole' days, Id rather not resmell... I mean relive those days.

Yes, but at the end of the week you won't have any money to put in the offering plate at church.

One more word on McKee - they are Seventh Day Adventists, and I'm pretty sure they do indeed shut everything down for the Sabbath, as this is an important part of what they believe. Best of luck to you.

I hope you mean the guys who make multiple stops during the day ,As I view shutting down at truck stops a must not a convenience , as Shippers, receivers, rest stops ETC do not off the ability to shower daily ....And Baby Wipes and alcohol rubs ...DO NOT substitute a shower ever.... Living dirty does not constitute a STRONG WORK ETHIC just simply a propensity towards being a dirty slob that does not mind living life HOBO STYLE

I hope this was not an insult for us who worship, and try to run a career. I'm a Seventh Day Adventist, and I as well keep the Sabbath from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. Have the same problem as the OP...

so please refrain from religously racial discrimination.

    Thank you
