I'm still waiting on a response from Glenn. The Tyson driver I talked with today said that he had made 49 grand so far this year. He also said that the home time was better with Cargo and the money was better with Tyson. He seems to be on track to surpass Cargo's avg for the year. But money isn't everything. Always trade offs it seems.
Looks like you two are headed to Claremont soon!!

I worked for Cargo part time for three summers. It has been a few years since, but I will tell you how it was then.

You had to run a set number of miles a quarter to keep an assigned truck.

Anytime you came in someone was waiting to take your truck to use. Your truck may or may not be there when you need to leave. I had drivers waiting for me for several hours to get back so they could leave.

Hopefully this is not the case with assigned trucks anymore.

I refused to leave in three trucks in one night because they were too nasty. The filth was from the assigned drivers. The night dispatcher did not like it, but I told him to go look, and if he would sleep there, then I would. I got another truck.

The drivers of the dirty trucks were made to clean them up.

The dispatcher I had would rather lie than tell the truth. He no longer works there.

To be honest, the other dispatchers were mostly real nice. A lot of them had been drivers there, and knew what it was all about.

The trucks are new or almost new, and if you write up a problem it will be fixed. The main problem is getting drivers to write up the problems.

They are very safety oriented. They expect you to drive and act like a professional.

They have a nice building, and had a good benefits package back then.

I don't know how things are now that Mr. Pope, the owner, died. He seemed like a good guy to me.

The trucks are all automatics I think. 67 mph.

There were some very nice people who worked there who treated you good.

I haven't worked there for 8 years, so things may have changed for the better or worse. I would like to know myself.

I get postcards about three times a year asking me to come back.

I would go there before most of the big companies talked about on this forum.

    shawn loftin,

Is the Jason you mentioned a dispatcher with Cargo? If so what is his last name.

The Jason who was there about 10 years ago went to Paramount Express for a while. After that I never heard from him again. If he is the same guy then you couldn't ask for a better person to work with.

    Stranger,
Thanks for the info. Most of what you said goes along with what we've heard from other drivers, past and present, that we've talked with.

Cable, Shawn and I are classmates in a local driver training program. When Shawn said Jason he was addressing Cable directly as that's his name. Not sure if there is a dispatcher with that name at Cargo.

Cargo has picked up 4 from our class who will be going to orientation within the next week.

The director of the training facilities is also a part time driver with them and had mentioned some of the same things you had about being part time and having to slip into the trucks of some off duty drivers. Well not the filthy part but the other things you mentioned. At least they didn't force you to take one of those.

We've had so many recruiters come in over the past 7 weeks or so it seemed that part of our training has been to seperate which ones were being mostly straightup from the ones who were mostly blowing smoke. We've seen pay rates that range from a low of .27/m to the mid to high .30's. We hope from our uneducated guesses and from driver input we've made as wise as choice as possible.

Anyhow thanks again for your input.

If you are from the Hickory area, and want to be home most every weekend, and don't mind slip seating, I would go with Cargo.

They at least know who you are, and you can talk to anyone up to the top man. In other words, they are not so big that they don't care.

They really try to work with the drivers to make a hard job as good as can be.
