Lightbulb Help me get back on the road.

Well after driving throughout the us for 20 plus years with no accidents or tickets and i still hold and keep my class a with all indorsements i am not able to truck anymore. I stopped trucking in 2007 due to my 12 year old daughter having a bad time without me home so i took a local job installing major appliances, and im glad i did cause she is doing great and made me a grandfather not to long ago and she has a great husband and everyone is happy. So what can i do to get back out there? would a trucking school be wise or maybe the only way, any good ideas would be great. thank you, be safe.

You may try smaller carriers. Some of the larger carrers might give you an opportunity by putting you with a trainer for a couple of weeks or so. Swift, Roehl, Millis, etc., train new people so they might be a good way to get started. You may even need to take a refresher in order to get back in the saddle. You have been out of a truck for quite a while. Sometimes you have to jump through some hoops to get your foot back in the door.

Most companies will require recent OTR or a recent grad of a trucking school. Or they will expect a refresher course. I am not sure of where you live, but if you are in the hiring area maverick does not require a refresher or a school of any kind if you have a CDL. When I first went with them I just had to go with a trainer for about a week or two. I am going back to them in 1 week. I have recent now and all I have to do this time is go thru orientation and what they call the barn. It is their securement training. I can't remember, but I think it is 3 days or so. After that I grab a truck and roll solo.

I don't know how "true" this is, but Averitt (Cookeville, TN) advertised a "Refresher Course" on a job site I checked. I've applied, and will post back here on how it goes.
I, too, have been out of the seat for a while, so hopefully, this is a chance to get some current drive time under my belt.
Either way, good luck with your search...and I'm glad you had your priorities straight! The return on investment is beautifully obvious!

No word back from Averitt...which was sort of expected, given the huge, although wrong, black mark on my DAC. The fact that they didn't get back to me, however, is no indication of whether or not you might not benefit from contacting them about the possibility of a "refresher course" that would allow you to get back out there!
Good luck with your search, Driver. Wishing you all the best!
