Log book Question

Ok I am leaving out on my first load after a 7 year retirement. I am up to date on how to do the current log book rules.

My new boss and I had a little difference of opinion of how many days past you must have with you. I remember you need to have the previous 7 days. He saying 30 days. I'll more than likely have a few more than what required in the way I do them my self for my copy wise goes, but I want to know which of us was right. I'll end up with a small note book that I put the old pages in.

he's the boss if he says 30 days then it's 30 days. He may have his reasons. Maybe it looks like your not hiding anything if you have 30 days. Why argue keep 30 days to make him happy.

We did not argue, he was not sure. He had already stated he was not good at log books and all the rules. Plus he been in the dark ages, never heard of the loose pages log books which I have grown accustom to.

As for making him Happy, for I am going to work there making him happy, I became their saving grace. had 2 trucks running and one driver in the Hospital and no longer able to handle the OTR part, plus nobody else qualified for the Larger truck that will be Operational in 2 weeks. So I came along just at the right time, so He is happy.

I hope you are clear on all the rules and regulation yourself before you start training. We have had some on this board in the past that were trainers and didn't know the rules themselves.

Why have only 7 days of logs and not 30 you might ask.

When you have more than 7 days and give them to Mr. D.O.T. for inspection you can be cited for any entry he/she finds. However, by having only 7 days you can only be cited for something during those 7 days.

So why would you take a chance?

Other things driver do that can cause Mr. D.O.T. to look closer are: sloppy entries and to much detail. Take the time to draw nice straight line and clearly print all your entries. Only put on your logs what is required.

If you have a computer and a printer I recommend you purchase a logging program such as Driver's Daily Log.

DDL can be downloaded for free, it is a full function trial which is good for either 30 or 90 days...can't remember which. After the trial time elapses you have to buy the liscence for it to continue working.

I've been using DDL for over a year now. Probably don't even know how to fill out a log page any more. As long as I drive, I'll use DDL.

How much do you fill in the fields in DDL? There are more tabs in this program then any other program I've used. Still didn't get it to update mileage from previous day from odometer. If I did get it to update the first day I used it would not update the second or any day after that. It keeps going back to zeros when I used the tab to automatically figure it for you. Is there a way to get rid of the second driver from the program if driving solo? I've been using computers since the Commodore 64 came out in the 80's and not just for games. Can design and use web design programs as well as Visual Basic and many more, so I do have what I consider very good computer skills. DDL seems like it isn't user friendly and the help tutor is well to me leaves out a lot. Seems to skip over most features. If they could tweak that up some it would be a GREAT program. DDL is not for computer dummies and that is a shame on who will use it. To add what I did figure out I loved it. Maybe just need to take it slow with more time and not try to use every field and function and stick to what is only needed? Hope I explained it well enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't used the program for over 2 years so I don't remember much of the program.

I did recommend to Nick some years ago to strip out most of the options and make it a simple logging program. Maybe someday he will do it.

some other rules to keep in mind are:

you must submit your original logs to the company who's DOT authority you're running under within 13 days.

( I'm assuming the owner you're working for-- is leasing You/truck out to someone with Authority.)

So, with you in possession of 8days-- that only allows a 4 day "gap" for logs in transit( between Truck-Carrier)....

other considerations are- once you complete these 4 logs between 8-13th--
make sure all these logs/trip paperwork is sealed in a US Postage Stamped Envelope( if still on board your truck) This way, Mr DOT will have to call the Postmaster General--if he wants to legally look at them.----Opening your mail is a federal crime.

:shock: I say keep the previous 7 days, why give the DOT any more than they have to have. If the company wants 30 days, just say OK, but hide the other 23 days someplace where the DOT won't find them. That way everyone is (reasonably) happy and none the wiser!
