Disabilities question?

I have a nephew who had a motorcycle accident a couple years ago and lost the vision in one eye. My question is there a permit or something that would allow him to drive? The handbook is kind of vague on this I was just wondering if any of you out there might have some"serious" feedback. Thank You.

He can try applying for an excemption from the FMCSA.

you can try what uturn suggested,but i very seriously doubt it,with only having one good eye,his peripheral vision is going to be greatly reduced

b)(10) Has distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70° in the horizontal meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber;

Head-eyes. When other than the Snellen chart is used, the results of such test must be expressed in values comparable to the standard Snellen test. If the driver wears corrective lenses for driving, these should be worn while driver's visual acuity is being tested. If contact lenses are worn, there should be sufficient evidence of good tolerance of and adaptation to their use. Indicate the driver's need to wear corrective lenses to meet the vision standard on the Medical Examiner's Certificate by checking the box, "Qualified only when wearing corrective lenses." In recording distance vision use 20 feet as normal. Report all vision as a fraction with 20 as the numerator and the smallest type read at 20 feet as the denominator. Monocular drivers are not qualified to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce.

I read (transport topics a while back) where they (FMCSA I think) gave 1000 monocular drivers vision exemptions and tracked their safety record to see how they would do. Guess what. They posted a better safety record than binocular drivers did. Must be because they turned their head more their one eye swept more area and picked up things the other guy's missed.

They are right now re-evaluating the physical requirements and supposedly there will be some major changes, I wonder how that little test will play into it. Maybe you're nephew won't be out of luck after all...
