DOT likes my log sheets

Got DOT'd today. He took my log book and said come see me in the yellow van when you're parked.

I got tired of writing my name an address every day so I scanned a blank log page into my laptop and added my name and address. Now I just print them as I need them. Then I 3 hole punch 'em and put them in my binder. They're loose leaf, there is no carbon and no copies. If I need to copy, I'll use a photocopier. Anyway, I was wondering what they would say when I got DOT'd. He said he especially liked the way I put the prior days in their own plastic sleeve.

That's what he said just before he wrote me up. I didn't document all 7 prior days the way the US wants them. In Canada you need 14 days, but it's recorded differently.

I'm curious as to what exactly you mean. If you had the previous 7 days logs, that's all you need. You are not required by any FMCSA rule to do a recap. If he wrote you up for the recap being wrong, then he wrote you up for a bogus ticket.

I know. It's confusing and I didn't explain it well.

In Ontario you are not required to fill out a log for the days you didn't work i.e. if you go on duty on the 18th but were off the 17th, you can note "zero hours on duty for the 17th" on your log for the 18th.

As we all know, the US wants you to write up a log for the 17th, draw a line and total 24 off duty hours. I know this and I used to do it that way.....at least until I got a Canadian log book that has this nice little recap for your off duty days. I thought I would test the DOT man. He was not amused. "That's fine in Ontario, but when you're down here, I want you to do it this way".

it was just a written warning. Not really a fine or a ticket.

All I've ever done is in the date field do something like 2/1-17/08

then under the graph:

"february 1 to 17 off inclusive"

That's the way I was told to do it by safety.

I do the same thing, but found some carbonless copy paper at Staples. One page is white, the next is pink. Run them through the the copy machine, three hole punch 'em. Works good. Here is a link:

5000 sheets for $114, plus copy fees.

I have a stamp set that you can put your own letters in. I made a stamp for my company name and address. Takes just a few minutes to do a months log.

I also made up a log sheet like you guys are talking about and started to use it. I found it to be a pain in the butt. I made everything bigger for my 51 year old eyes and I really liked that but having to keep them in a binder and the trying to write in the binder or clip board it was just to cumbersome.

I went back to my regular log book put inside one of those aluminum form holder.
