Default lets talk reefers.. units/boxes

i'm making the jump to reefer work to see if the grass is greener. my vans aren't food grade so either way i'd need to buy a trailer. this isn't about if i should or shouldn't so lets keep that convo for a different time.

with that said,

i'm looking at 2 different brands of trailers.

one is a 2010 wabash arctic lite with a 2500a carrier. tho i really don't need much advice on them my dad has 3 and has nothing but great luck. was just in texas and trailer had no issue at -10.

other ones are

2010-2011
utility 3000r. one fleet has them with thermo king SB210 one with 2500a carriers.

all trailers mentioned are from major fleets.

I pulled mostly Great Dane w/whisper quiet TK and lots of love for them.
Not driving now, but did about 1 million miles doing reefer.

Great Dane hooked up to a KW, and I'd be King of the Road again.

i can't have nice things.... haha but i hear the GD's are real heavy. and my freightliner is heavy for what it is. also the chance i'll be going to a hood truck if the Elogs don't get shut down.

anyway, i'm pretty set on these 2 due to i feel more comfterable with fleet maintained.

Get one with an air slide, because with reefer work, you will be sliding tandems a lot.
You are definitely going to need a cold trailer, even during 100+ temps, because if you haul grocery, you will haul ice cream.

I knew you were set on the Wabash and Utility trailers, and wish I had some experience with them, to offer any advice.

My favorite Trailer was a GD 48' with a spread axle. I did a lot of multiple stops, so it was nice to have a tail loader, and not have to stick my weight up at the nose.
Also, some deliveries I had were in some real tight spots, even though I could manage a 53', life was easier with that 48'.
East Coast has some small places to deliver with these big OTR rigs. Philadelphia was the worst. My delivery was downtown where those roads use to be horse & buggy.
With my 53 footer and my 270" wb Pete, you could hear the curses at me from blocks away, as I took up 3 lanes to make a turn. Fuggum
... and if they don't move, I'll scrape them off me on those narrow streets.

As far as reviews go, I have always heard drivers like Utility over Wabash... for what that is worth. The Utility I pulled did seem to cool down fast, compared to my Dane.
But my Dane never failed me in Texas heat. If you have to haul there in the summer, no matter what trailer you have, it's going to be running 10+ warmer.
Great Danes will hold the temp better in extremes, I think they use different material that seals the insulation better... at least the Super Seal does, and that was what I had.
If you ever get an ice cream load, you want a Super Seal.

I liked the 53' going to California, but you have to watch those bridge laws. One of the worst yards for me to deliver was in California, where I was picking up Oranges.
I fortunately had the 48' spread, and was glad I didn't have to get the 53' in there. Plus I didn't worry about bridge laws with the 48'.

If you are going to be hauling 40K it's easier to balance your load and not get in trouble at the scales, with a 48' spread. I know with my 53' I didn't like getting loads over 36-37k.
If you have a 53' and are hauling 2000+ miles, you know they are going to stick as much weight on you as they can,
and you have to be on top of it, or you may be returning to them, after you try to scale, to have them take that last @#!~ pallet off! (plus the wasted time)

I could load the 48' up to the back doors, but going 2000+ miles... especially on Hwy. 80 out west, the 53's run so much smoother.

I hauled frozen mostly. One time I hauled frozen Chinese. I didn't even know that was legal, but out of L.A. they are glad to get rid of those bastards. Frozen is the only way to stop the bitching.... and you don't want to be around when they thaw out.

I know... I'm not even the tiniest bit PC.

Here is a nice article, also it pointed out something I forgot, most shippers demand the 53' these days...just saying, no doubt you are just looking at a 53 anyway.
Trailer Report: Weight vs. Cost - Article - TruckingInfo.com

Talking about weight, I remember my Super Seal weighed around 16,400. But I don't remember what I had for breakfast, soooooooo maybe I am off a few hundred pounds.
Had aluminum wheels which helps a little, and I didn't carry a spare, and stowed my chains in the tractor, under my bunk. Going west in the winter, you have to have your chains.

I still have all my records and logs, so the info is there. I know.... I should have shredded the evidence. I did get rid of my second log book though.

another thing that came to mind, now that you have me reminiscing the "good ole days".

Reefer trailers get real messy, and I always carried a push broom and a sweeper.
I don't know how many times I labored like that, before it dawned on me to use a leaf blower w/ear protection. sheeeesh I can be slow

If you haul meat, you have to power wash after the load, and of course many grocery loads can be hell to sweep out, like saaaaaay frozen blueberries no longer frozen.
or lettuce.

I had a Pilot rewards card I used to scrape the sludge at the tail end. Had no other use for that card, but it did a nice job of scraping muck.

You know me, i like to post videos. They only let me post one video per post here, so I'll post the Utility one first and the Wabash one next.
I like the break away mud flaps. nice ya, eh
