Only a few states actually require workman's comp for O/O's; North Carolina comes to mind as one. However, most fleets require that IC's carry occupational accident insurance. It's not required by the state unless you have employees, but companies mandate it by putting it into the IC contract. This is what SNI and others have always required.

I didn't know about receiving the last driver's post-trip on the trailer, but that is rather neat. I wish we could set it up to see that, but ours are all on paper and sometimes, they don't get done.
Keep us posted, and good luck.

It's been somewhat of a screwed up week. On 3 different occasions I had to completely redo my trips because of a load cancellation. They said that cancelled load is very rare. Well, then, I must be very unlucky. The first one was no big deal since I didn't have a specific area or place I needed to be. The last 2, though... I'm needing to get home to WV and that's not easy coming out of Texas. The first go-round on getting a trip home was a total of 3 deliveries, with the last one delivering 30 miles from my house on Monday morning. The current one is 4 loads, with the last one delivering about 90 miles from home.

The upside is that my current one will do pretty good on pay, so I guess that sort of makes me feel better about finding last minute loads. Again.

Have to go to Freightliner for my first repair this afternoon. At least it's a very minor one. The gasket between the drive axle and the wheel hub is leaking. It's spraying grease onto the rim.

That's the way a repair job is supposed to go. I checked in, 15 minutes later it was in the garage. 15 minutes after that, the mechanic had it fixed. A couple of minutes to run the warranty and I was on the road again.

Not millions, but I think I'm doing good. I *can* pay myself more than I averaged as a company driver after everything is paid (including 29% for taxes). But, I'm not.

I've had a couple of great weeks, with averages of about $4,500 per week in income. The truck is averaging about 7.85mpg due to the heavy loads I keep seeming to find, but that's still good. I'm paying out about $1,300 per week in fuel.

The best thing I like about it is having the ability to plan myself. If I don't want to go to the northeast, I don't. But, there's good money up there. So far, I've stayed clear of it. As of right now, I've got loads planned on me up until Oct 6th. The freight base here is outstanding. I just looked and there are over 6,600 loads on the board right now. Some of them are 'dedicated', meaning the same load from the same place to the same destination, usually every day or 2. I'm still in the process of learning the good freight lanes, but getting the hang of it pretty quick.

To me this says a lot, smart thinking right there. That was the problem you had at your most recent place, trying to scratch out a living was tough to almost impossible of late. Now your a little bit more stable on your own, your not looking to make millions and millions, just make a decent living out of it. A guy I know locally to me, been trucking at least since I was born 33 years ago, last 7-8 years he's been an O/O leased on with Landstar. He owns the truck and trailer out right, but, the loads he is running are into Montreal and NYC so you'd think he's making great money. He has a niche because he's runs a cab over so he can get into places the conventional cabs can't but he's only making enough to have a decent living. Stays out 3-4 weeks at a time then takes a week or two off. He's perfectly happy with his situation because his mindset isn't about making the most money possible to live high on the hog. Keep doing what your doing Mal!
