It's a trade off. If you want a much better ride (which is where you spend most of your time), you have to suffer for the short amount of time when you're trying to get it into a dock. But, you do get used to the 20 or 30 inches added to your wheel-base after a while. Always wanted to try the wheel-base from one of those "DOUBLE-EAGLE" sleepers, but never got the chance. Never saw one of them backing into a food warehouse dock either. But, I did get to see one that parked his trailer on one space at a Pilot, than take up the next space with the tractor. I'm told the ride is very smooth with that wheel-base.
I drove a long hood for years. Loved it. Also drove short-hoods, and backed into docks without many problems. For the east coast, the COE is still boss. But, I survived there with a long hood too.
