Default My Air Tank EXPLODED!!! Anyone Ever Have This Happen???

One of my three air tanks under my driver's seat of my 2006 Volvo 780 exploded the other day! It just blew apart at the welded seams. Fortunately, I was only going 20 or 25 MPH at the time, and quickly pulled over.

I was towed to Lake City, FL for repair, but they had to order a new tank, so I was down a full 24 hours.

Damn Aluminum!!! It should have been made out of steel, then this would not have happened, most likely.

Those aren't cheap either. Steel ones rust out.

Is your air pressure regulater working? Make sure the pressure's not to high, after all that tank was the weakest link in the system. You don't want to find another weak point!

original tank? Some serious quality control issues with how it came apart across so large a stretch of seam, end to end and around the ends.

I know! It seems like the welding was far less than 100% penetration. I wonder if my others 2 tanks are imminently ready to blow?

Check for a recall on those tanks. Seems a liability lawsuit could come from one of these tanks exploding like this while a driver is standing near them. I had a Volvo 770 tank that started to leak and got replaced and 6 mos. later another.

i know the older volvos had steel tanks that would last a long time. What would be their downfall was that the batteries were above them and would sooner or later corrode the tanks. Yours dont look corroded at all tho...

Aufgeblassen, do you still have the tank, and where on the continent are you?

The technical maintenance folks I forwarded the picture to are interested in more information.

One of the tractors at my last company, a '05 Columbia, had one blow apart almost identical to that. He was driving at 65mph when it happened.
