    Default Paccar diesel engines

Noticed that Paccar is putting their own engines in the Peterbilt trucks. Who makes their engines? Didn't I read somewhere that it was Cat?

I'm fairly certain that Cummins is making them. We just bought a new fire truck that has a medium duty Paccar engine in it and I'm pretty impressed with it. In fact even though it says Paccar on it that the Cummins name is also on there somewheres if I remember right. It's got some get up and go and the exhaust brake is incredibly powerful. It's very smooth running and quiet. We have another truck nearly identical bulit in 2000 with with the Cummins ISC which is nice also but compared to the new one it runs different.

The Paccar engine is just that, Paccar. It is based on the DAF engine platform that's been used in Europe for a few years. DAF is a subsidiary of Paccar. Paccar's engine plant in MS is scheduled to open this Fall, until then the engines are being built in Europe and imported.

    Just some FYI.....

The PACCAR enige gets a rating of a B10, which means 90% of it's motors will reach 1 million miles w/o rebuild

compare that to CUmmins, Volvo, Detroit, and now pointless CAT which were all rated at a B50 (50% reached 1 million miles)

I'm going to wait and see how they do the first 2 years and may just buy me a brand new 2013 Petercar if we are still even here.

How, and when did it manage to get this rating, since they just starting serial production? And as far, as i'm concern, no european DAF comes near that mileage. So, how come?

PACCAR rated it that, not the govt, I fixed my post after my second reading....

This is what I read....... the motor has been installed in 125,000 class 8 trucks for the past 2-4 years for testing. Thats what they rated it at for those tests. They dont just MAKE engines and throw them out there, they do years of research and delvelopment on them, and that is what they felt to rate it. I honestly have no idea, I'm just telling you what I read.

"Though new to North America, the MX has been powering Paccar's DAF trucks for about four years. And of course it's only the latest in a series of engines the company has cranked out over the past 50 years. "We've delivered more than 900,000 engines to date," says Cardillo, "and have 125,000 MX engines in service (outside North America) already. It's reliable, quiet, and fuel-efficient." "

Paccar claims a B10 engine life for the MX, which means 90% of the engines will reach a million miles of service
Well, it what they "claims", the truth, in a real world applications, remains to be seen....

After years of driving in Russia, I imagine Solo's familiar with DAF's history of reliability. Given that none of the manufacturers have been terribly successful in that department since the EPA mandated changes, it's not unreasonable to be skeptical of claims that longevity has been nearly doubled. Not to say it can't be true, but a healthy dose of, "I'll believe it when I see it" is certainly warranted.

YouTube - PACCAR MX Engine Video.wmv

This is just one read on the Engine however, the more I read about it the more impressed I am. It could very well be the Engine of choice in the States. I hope to have it under my hood next year.

When i was driving there, we didn't even dream, o heard about such. But i'm in contact with some of the today drivers over there, and tho all they say, european engine has it positive moments, it didn't run nearly as long as american. And yes, I'm a CAT man!

Ahhh, yeah the medium duty engines. Cummins has been building those since '07. Different bird than the class 8's. But you're right...still a Paccar

    Fact:
Paccar bought DAF Motors Ag, in Europe 3 years ago for nothing more than to steal their ideas, the engine in question is made by DAF and Paccar claims it to be their own, so much for "american Ingenuity"

Somedays it doesn't pay to chew through the restraits:
