    Default Lost a steer tire!

While driving north in the state of Maine last week, I heard a loud "BOOM" and this is what I ended up with. I was going straight, 65 MPH, and was about 65k#'s. Yes, it scared the **** out of me. I replaced both steer tires the next morning. The old ones had about 14/32nds and were in good condition.

    Be safe out there!!

I have blown a steer tire before. It can really damage your hood or fender. It is always best to have a plan should something like a blown steer tire happen. It isn't something that is expected. It seems that most of the time when I have blown a tire it is either a drive or trailer tire. It sounds like you kept your wits about you.

I too lost a steer tire but it didn't just go boom, there was some debris in the road and another truck hit it and sent it spinning in front of me you can guess the rest. I was already on the brakes and it took a few seconds to go flat but in that time the pucker factor was pretty high! Ya just never know when some thing like that's gonna happen. Scott, glad we didn't read about you in the papers

Thanks for the concerns guys. Yes, it was instant. I did not have time to think, just react. I just backed out of the throttle and eased it to the shoulder. I did not want to slow to quickly and weigh the front axle too much.

    Have a good weekend!

I know it's just dumb luck but I've never had a blow out on the steer axle but on my way through Wisconsin a few years back I was being passed by a another big truck when he blew his right front tire next to my window which was down by the way. Scared the poo right out of me. I almost went off the road. I stopped with him to see if I could lend a hand and discovered I was shaking as bad as he was.

I lost a steer tire coming out of the Grass Lakes scales on 94 near Detroit. I hade just rolled in with 118,000lb loader on a lowboy and had my permits checked. My spotter got out in front as I came out on the ramp the left front blew at 30mph and I ended up in the median. Thank god no one was hurt, at that weight it just went where it wanted to. The other time I was going 60mph thru Indy with 34K in the box and it rode straight as an arrow and I was able to pull over to the shoulder. Both times were 24.5 Goodyears

i have blown two front steers, one was a regular steer tire, and the truck was empty, steered fine, the second time was 4 years later, i blew a front wide base steer tire on a fully loaded cement mixer, it steered fine as well. both did major hood and fender damage.
