    Ah here we go:

NYCDOT - Oversize/Overweight Permits for Commercial Vehicles and Trucks

Anything over 96" wide and combo of 55 feet or longer is considered "oversize" and needs a day pass.

    more specific:

    Hey Ya'll,

Well, I made it. Thanks for everyone for all their help and information. I ended up going in through staten island. I went across the Verazanno, on the BQE and across the Manhattan bridge. I then went up 6th ave to 57th street. On the way out, I took the first ave bridge to 87 and then across the GWB.

It was a very fun and exciting trip. I got to the delivery at 9:30 sat night, just about the busiest time that close to times square. People were posing and taking pics with my truck. It was funny stuff....

    Check out the pics.

Yeah, I 2nd that. On a survey for drivers that would probably be right at the top of the list of places no one wants to go. You didnt just go into the city, you went INTO THE CITY! Nice job on getting in and getting out.

    Better than me.

Last week I accidently found myself on an onramp for the Southern Beltway in Brooklyn...

    Ooooopss. Too late now.

Oh...Only 2 exits to the Home Depot , yeah I can make it...!

Wrong! 50 yards later around the curve was a little itty bitty yellow sign...(Truck Restriction 400 feet)

Railroad overpass. Middle of the arch marked 10'9".

    Oooops again.

Hmmm....This Prostar (w/flat) is only 11'1". Maybe if I dump the suspension, take off my hat, and squinch my eyes I can squeeze under...lol.

Nope...parked on the shoulder with the 4-ways on and contemplated my dilemma.

Within 5 minutes a nice NYC cop stopped to assist.

"Think you can make it up this grassy hill to that road over there?"

Hmmmmm....80 to 100 yards up a grassy hill (I wouldn't ride a mower lengthwise across) w/ 48,280 on the back? Nope...don't think so.

I asked and he told me that he was PRETTY sure those overpasses were marked LOWER than actual height

I said....good...I'll dump my suspension and go thru the middle.

He said "I was afraid you'd say that...you go slow and I'll go out here and piss off three lanes of traffic."

Whew...made it thru and my antennas didn't even touch.

He didn't let them go till I got off at the next exit and disappeared outta his sight.

You know, people talk a lot of shmack about being ticketed and harassed by NYC cops. I (knock on wood) have found them to be nothing but helpful, even if they can be a bit brusque (such is the way of New Yorkers). All the want is for you to impede traffic as little as possible. They understand you've got a job to do and have always been understanding when we've been down there (did LTL in all 5 boroughs every week for two years).
