Default Health ins through company as an owner operator?

If you sign on with a company as an owner operator you may be eligible for their health insurance? Anybody know how much these companies may charge per week to insure owner operators?

I am eligible with Unigroup to get a health insurance plan, but it's VERY expensive. I believe they quoted me around 300/month for a good plan. I ended up going to Ehealthinsurance.com and getting hooked up with blue cross / blue sheild for a little over 100 per month.

BC, please more details about your health plan. I realize that age, etc. affects cost, also deductable and coverage choices of course. I have shopped ehealthinsurance also but have not seen a deal like that.

I'm 26, smoker, no ailments or no medications for misc health concerns.

It is the 80/20 plan. My max out of pocket for a year would be 4500 if things went really wrong. $30 office visits, PPO, etc. I can look into it further, I remember going over it thouroghly when I got it, but I thank the lord everyday for decent health.

I would search out an independent agent and compare policies. I landed a Blue Cross/Blue Shield major medical health plan tied to an Health savings account for $395 a month. I'm in my 50's, smoke and the wife has to take thyroid medication. It has a $5 million lifetime payout, so it is not a limited policy. I like the Health Savings account option.... great tax advantages and you can deduct every little medical cost. No waiting to deduct after your out of pocket exceeds 7.5% of you adjusted gross on traditional 80/20 type plans. Every dime that is put into the HSA is non-taxable. So I get the premium and everything I spend on medical.... even a thereuputic massage.... tax free. And I don't have to detail out the expenditures on any tax form. Cool Deal. I have $5000 deductable for the year, after that... 100% insured with no copays, no percentages, etc. What I don't use in the Health Savings Account just sits in there and collects interest and rolls over. No loss if I don't use it all. Plus it is my health plan and I am not at risk of losing it if I decide to move my truck elsewhere.

If you check places, like you local Farm Bureau, you can land one of these kinds of policies for a reasonable cost. Any independent insurance agent can explain the benefits of an HSA plan.

OOIDA has a plan too. It's not really insurance in the traditional sense. You pay the bill and they reimburse you for part of the visit. You'd have to check with them for the details and see if it makes sense for you.
