Default I need a broadband phone that I can use on my laptop

I have a T-mobile blackberry pearl 8100 which I use as a modem to connect to my laptop.I have the desktop manager configured to dial to the net via usb cable.
While in the truck , my pearl 8100 went out with the symbol of a battery with a line through it.Apparently the battery is good and I think the phone is the problem.

My uncle then said instead of getting an aircard for the laptop, I can get a 3G+ phone with broadband capabilities. In this case the broadband phone will act as a router for the laptop without using any USB cable to get online.Even if I have to get a data plan from T-mobile(as I currently have)on the phone, I will like to do this without using any cables to get online.
Which T-mobile phone will do this?In this case it will save money without getting 2 different plans(aircard and cell phone plan)?

Get the google g1 phone. It's a 3g phone and a fairly good phone.I get my faxes, emails, internet through it.Battery life kind of sucks and overall is a great phone.I don't have it set up so i can tether it to my laptop yet.The 3g speed on t mobile is kind of slow, and only present in big cities.Don't expect a internet speed such as the one from sprint or verizon. But hey, 20 bucks a month is worth it for what i need.

Can I get this phone unlocked from ebay and use it on T-mobile network?I will assume it also has wifi capabilities.I think what I am trying to do will require a software (third party) and the laptop must be blue tooth enabled.I think CrackBerry.com ? The #1 Site for BlackBerry Users & Abusers had a software like that but I can't remember the name of it.I will check ebay to see if I can get this phone to avoid a contract.

I think this software might do the trick.I emailed their tech support to ask them if I would still need to run my USB cable from the laptop to the phone to get on the net.
If this software will work wirelessly with my laptop then yes it will do the trick with a data plan on my blackberry pearl.

Any WM6 or higher phone is capable of tethering without any hacks.

As I sit looking all around,
Confusion and uncertainty is all I found.
    The answers are there,
But I do not know where.
    Optimistic and hopeful dreams,
Are all I have so it seems.
The future I do not know,
So all I can do is take it slow.
But I do know it will work out,
So I wait and watch without a doubt

hey Mat, you seem to know some stuff when it comes to software.

I may be locked out in getting this Tether software.I emailed their support dept to find out if I would still need a USB cable from the pearl 8100 phone to the laptop and they said yes.
What would be the prupose?I am already using a USB cable from the phone to the laptop and using desktop maanger and dial up networking to get on the net.
I may just give up and go the old fashion way and get me an air card
