As I posted last weekend I was cited for not having a IFTA license at a inspection is Missouri. The more I think about it the more I wonder.

I put the 09 IFTA stickers on my truck and put the license in my permit book the week of Christmas. The book never left the compartment where I keep it until I was stopped for being overweight entering Arizona. They asked for my permit book and looked at it and handed it back and let me go.

When I was stopped in Missouri they told me to bring all my paperwork in BOL's, logbook, permits. I took everything in and he told me to go sit in my truck for 15 minutes while he went through everything. When i went back in he was making a copy of a page out of my logbook. I asked if there was a problem and he said yes and showed me and I started laughing because he was clueless. He said I had went over my 14hrs. I had stopped and checked my logs and redid a couple to make sure they were perfect because some of our other drivers had been getting the red light there on the prepass. I asked him how he figured that and he said you go on duty when you come off sleeper berth, I said no I go on duty when I log it on duty 4hrs after I came out of the sleeper berth. He said yeah you are right. Then he says show me your IFTA license and I open my book and there is a empty plastic sleeve. I said it was right here when I was stopped 4 days ago in Arizona. I asked if he had a fax machine and he said yes and I asked if I could have it faxed there and he said no you must have it with you. He told me to go wait in the truck until he came out. He came out about 15 minutes later and did the truck inspection and told me come inside. When I went inside he had the citation for no IFTA license written out.

3 things could of happened:

1. Arizona took it out and didn't put it back. (I put the book back in the compartment where I keep it and never looked at it)
2. It fell out when Arizona passed my book back to me. (At the scale the window in the same height as your truck window)
3. The Missouri guy pulled it out to write a citation.

He wrote on the citation "No IFTA License for a Commercial Vehicle"

Do I fight it??
Pay it and go on?
With the stickers on the truck shouldn't they let you have one faxed?
I'm sure it was there when Arizona looked at my book or they would of said something??

IFTA has granted a 2 month grace period for all 2009 renewals. You have until March 1st to get your credentials in order.

IFTA has granted a 2 month grace period for all 2009 renewals. You have until March 1st to get your credentials in order.

That's not his case. He did have 2009 IFTA sticker on a side. In any case, it's not worth time and effort, and not going affect his CDL.

This happens to us with trailer registrations.
I bet you check your book next time they give it back yo you.
I don;t think you mentioned how much the ticket was but I would pay it.
And then I would scan all my docs into my laptop so I can print one if it ever happens again.

The more I talk to veteran drivers around the shipping docks the more screwy it gets. All the drivers have told me you are never asked to go sit in the truck while they go through your paperwork.

This was my first inspection and I didn't know the normal procedure so I did was I was told and answered the questions that were asked.

I asked what the fine was as I was leaving and he said there is a card in the envelope with the costs and if your citation isn't on the card there is a 800 to call and ask. Then he said i know it is alot cheaper to just send in the payment rather than going to court. Then he said don't call the magistrate judge of that county because it had to go through Jefferson City. I have until 2-18-09 to pay it or go to court on that date at 9am. I haven't called the number yet to see what the fine is. The only thing on the card was logbook, no registration, and overweight.

I got the red light on my prepass at Banning yesterday and when I got to the ramp it said scales closed so I went on by. Was that what I was suppose to do?? They didn't come after me!!!!!

If the sign says closed keep on trucking. I run copies of everything in my permit book and keep them in a separate folder. Same with OD permits, that has saved my ***** a couple of times.

Exactly what I do,...I have a main book and a book that says "copies" they are identical except for the words on the cover.

On the other hand I would fight it,...call the DA's office and explain yourself to them, they tend to be more rational than your friendly neighborhood DOT.
I was able to get Colorado to drop an $800.00 ticket to $225.00 after I explained what happened.

Last year one of my drivers was stopped in Oklahoma and cited for not having his IFTA permit in his book. Evidently, we didn't put the new one in the permit book. Oklahoma is bad about checking IFTA when the new year turns. They would not allow us to fax a copy to the weigh station. I think the ticket was less than $100 which had to be paid before the driver was allowed to leave. In my case, we had the stickers on the truck but didn't have the new IFTA renewal in the truck.

I think part of the reason for so much of this regulation, & beauratic paperwork is the know that with so much to keep up with there is a good chance many folks will not have something in order, thereby revenue maker for states.. j.m.o.

That's exactly my point heavy,.... these jokers are no different than law enforcement, city code inspectors, or any group of people who enforce a set of laws and regulations. They are only human and born to make mistakes,...I just refuse to pay for their ignorance.
The best defense is for you to know the regs and to take a stand if there is "revenue making" in process.
I had it out with an AZ scale about my front axle weight,....argued with them for ten minutes and finally had to go to my truck and get out the DOT bible and prove it to them. Then in Cali for my battery box, and the lights on the front of my sleeper in Fl. I give more details later,...I have to get on over to Pittsburgh and pick up some steel.
