what size trailer to buy

In running your own authority is it better to have a 53ft vs a 48 ft trailer or does it really matter? I am getting ready to get my authority and actually like the 48ft spreads. I will be getting a reefer if that makes any difference. Any info would be appreciated.

I would think that having a 53' trailer would be better. Isnt that pretty much the industry standard now?You can get 48' of cargo in a 53' trailer, But you cant get 53' of cargo in a 48' trailer. and you could get a 53' with a sliding axle so you could have it closed up or spread.

Get a 53', it gives you more options. If you can, buy a Utility trailer.

Ive talked to drivers that like their 48' reefers for good paying NYC freight. Otherwise, I'd say a 53.

It really depends on the type of trailer you plan on buying. I think most flat bedders still prefer a 48' trailer. Occasionally I see someone who wants a 53' flat. If I were looking at a van or reefer I would buy a 53' trailer. You don't need a 53' for most loads but some shippers request a 53' anyway.

53' Most load requires it. I've pulled 48 footers and the owner had hard times getting loads for them, one even lied and said it was a 53, and the shipper had a hard time loading it, and the receivers had even harder time.

One did, but as I stated above, both ends had a hard time. Load of Doors going to Home depot in Houston area.

On a flatbed a 48 spread will do what you want unless you haul oversized. In a van/reefer unless I was hauling for one company with a heavy product, like paper, I would go with a 53ft for the various loads I would pick up.
