Freight is down as are rates. Drugs must be running rampant. There are some owner operator and/or carriers who are hauling freight for under $1/mile. It won't be long before there will be more good buys on equipment.

I am running the road with my day cab. (crazy) But I like it. I was down in FL last week and came up into Atlanta, then on to NC, up RT 81 back home. Whites truck stop in VA is nice.

Saving my hotel receipts in case I am shaken down.
This is why I was looking for a sleeper.

Work is here local but much less and tougher to put 2 in the same day.

I think it depends on where you are running. Freight is down in many areas of the country. The up side is that there is still freight to haul. I have noticed a dramatic down turn in the rate I am being offered and their unwillingness to negotiate in many cases. Just over a month ago I was receiving calls that asked me what would it take to move a load. Now they throw the rate out and many are not willing to negotiate as much. I still have some regulars whom I have dealt for some time. I can usually get a decent rate from them, but not what it was a few weeks ago. Of course, fuel has come down somewhat. That is part of the problem. Fuel drops $0.50 and some brokers and shippers want a $0.50/ mile drop in the rate. We still have too many trucks or capacity in the market. There are still too many owner operators and carriers who are willing to haul for next to nothing. I have a truck in New Jersey. I was offered less than $1/mile by one broker. I had several in the $1.20-1.50 range. That is usually not a good area for rates anyway. On occasion I get a decent rate coming out of that area, but rates tend to be low in New Jersey.

I haven't noticed any changes in the tanker side of things. I do see a lot more tankers on my route than Box trucks.

Step deck rates are way down since September. A fella could almost name his price for a couple of weeks there. I was getting rates in the $3.25 - $3.75 range (~500 miles) just prior to the end Q3. Then the first week of October the bottom fell out. Now rates are $2.25 - $2.75.
