I see some independents with their real names on the door.
There must be an advantage to do so.

Yes, you can get a business license in any name you want as long as someone else isn't using it. I think it gives a better appearance when you have a company name rather than your own name on the door. I don't see it as an advantage to have my personal name on tth ddooWhether it is just ego or not you will need to ask Steve Booth about that, since you used him as an example. The IRS will issue you a FEIN either as a sole proprietorship, corporation, LLC or LLP. They don't care what name you use.
Years ago I started a Mail Order business. In my research I found this bit information. In choosing a Business Name best to use some other name than your own, for the purpose of reputation. If you do something to spoil your reputation it does not harm your business or vice verse.

remember when you were just a toddler & people would ask ..how old are you ? & instead of tellinghow old you were, you would hold up a bunch of fingers? well when someone asks you your name.. you just point to the name on the door.

When you are old your memory goes so might not remember the ribbon color, or the color of the truck. I can always check drivers license for name.

    First, you forget names

    Then, You forget faces,

Then, you start forgetting to zip your pants up.

Lately, I've started forgetting to zip my pants DOWN!!

Well for us old farts --when we crawl out of the sleeper in the morning we can look at the door to remind us who we are (as long as we are not in the wrong truck)
