It's pretty common knowledge that a Cat engine can go a million to a million-and-a-half miles before an inframe overhaul. Anyone know if a Detroit can go that long? 8)

I just had rods & mains put in my DD S60. Date code on the bearings 10/95, miles on Odometer 995,329 Runs very good.
Anyone know if a Detroit can go that long?
With proper maintenance ANY engine can.
If it was bought brand new and taken care of by you sure. Would I buy a truck with 600,000 miles and be sure it would go a million. Maybe if it had the maintainence records with it.
Don't trust anybody. Especially that guy in the mirror.
I drove more than one 60 Series that had 1 Million on the clock before it had an Overhaul done toit. Called how the driver treated it and how the shop worked on it made a difference to it. No workon it and yes they will need work done way before they should however one company I was with changed oil every 10-12K and got 1-1.3 million out of every motor in the fleet before even dropping the pans for bearing jobs all in how you treated them.
I don't know exact numbers, but my dad rebuilt his in 2003 and his truck is a 92. Never been touched before that.
His truck did at LEAST 120,000 miles per year. The first 5 years of its life it was a team truck as well. So I'm going to guess at least 1.6 million miles.
When it eventually went, it was a small coolant leak in a liner. Everything else was fine, but I guess the original owners didn't change the coolant often enough. Otherwise it would probably still be running.
Why then, in court under oath, did they claim that their engines 'were good' for 500,000 milesIt's pretty common knowledge that a Cat engine can go a million to a million-and-a-half miles before an inframe overhaul.![]()

I know of atleast two Cat's that have gone over a million miles without being rebuilt.Originally Posted by Mandilon
My detroit did 1.2 million. Had to replace a cracked head at 780k, but that was the driver i had on it. leaking rad hose and he didnt give a damn. put on a detroit head and detroit turbo at that time. both were a total pos. Rebuilt it myself and has 100k on it now. I did the head and turbo myself (i have a machine shop) and used oem detroit parts. Total cost, about 4k. I love my detroit.

It is amazing how long these engines will go. Have a friend with 1.4 million on his DD 60 now and he runs it every day. Never been into.
Worked for an LTL line for a few years, they had numerous DD60 and N-14 cummins in service with 1.2,1.3,1.4,1.5 million on them. And only serviced them every 25,000 miles.![]()
