you gonna tell the oil companies to lower prices or you wont buy their fuel?

what the north american transport industry uses isn`t shit to an oil company, they`ll say piss off and sell it to china or europe, then when we come crawling back we`ll be paying 6$ a gallon instead of 3$.

i`d been into the jim beam last night, by itself no hostility but I also spent 6 hours out in the zero degree weather laying on a cold concrete pad working on a truck that had no business being on the road.

Ahhh, the call of the open road.

Yesterday: Driving by 05:30. 7 hours later my 180 mile round trip is complete and I can start my work day by creating customs invoices and ACE manifests. 6:00 pm I start washing salt off trucks & trailers. 8:30pm. Day over.

Today: More customs invoices, ACE manifests (10 a week...uggggg, the drudgery). Install heated mirrors in a T800 then spend 3 hrs adjusting a the hood that opens and closes like it weighs 5 tons and is cracked all to heck because idiots throw them open and slam them shut. Still didn't get it right, but at least I can open it from the front now.

Tomorrow: A 300 mile round trip, including a border crossing. More manifests, more truck washing, put an air suspension gauge in a T800. Tarp a 13' - 6" high double drop load (30' wide x 53' long tarps in case you're wondering).

Thurs: A 360 mile round trip, a border crossing. More manifests...oh the endless manifests. Mark and measure 44 autoslacks. Fibreglass a T600 hood because....you guessed it.....idiots.

Today on Siruis 147 Freewheelin they talked about a strike on Jan3 '08 to jan 8'08. www.truckerstrike.com. All sounds good but I know it wont happen. We need to do something, so I support a strike and will shut my truck down.

No Brian, a strike is not to get the oil companies attention, but the government and the shippers, who are ignoring the rising fuel prices.

That in turn could affect prices if there is pressure put on the oil companies that have taken big time profits, and the OPEC nations who are nothing more than a pimple on our behind. If I were president, I would call them all to the whitehouse for a little talk, but Bush (who I voted for), is making the same mistake his daddy did in 1992, by ignoring the economy after the gulf war. GW doesn't need to be reelected so he doesn't care.

Ironically, Mexico only has one company (Pemex which is government owned), and their fuel is less than ours. So much for competition and free market.

There really isn't a free market from the suppliers standpoint. OPEC is a monopoly which is supposed to be illegal in this country. The problem is that OPEC is a consortium of other sovereign nations with their own rules. The only long term answer is alternative fuel sources or something that doesn't use petroleum. Personally, I prefer solar, especially the cost.

If you are waiting for government intervention you should be aware that high fuel costs are in the interest of the government. They tax each gallon of fuel. Most states have sales tax attached to fuel. The higher fuel costs go the more tax revenue the government generates. Government is NOT OUR FRIEND!! They are part of the problem. We could be less dependent on foreign oil if government would get out of the way. Over regulation and foolish EPA rules, special interests, etc., have prevented companies from drilling , exploring and generating more oil reserves. You can thank people such as Bill Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats for preventing further oil exploration. I would LOVE to see their stock portfolio's. I bet there are large chunks of oil stocks! Either these people are very stupid or corrupt. I would opt for the latter. Many people seem to want to blame Bush for all the ills of this country. Well, he didn't send troops to the Middle East without several hundred co-conspirators in congress, contrary to what most of them now say. He also didn't create high oil prices. One man simply isn't that powerful. I am not happy with these high oil prices. I also know that Bush isn't to blame for all of these problems. Bush doesn't make the laws, it is congress. It is congress and government agencies who have helped get us into this situation. And don't forget to look in the mirror. For too long, Americans have decided that apathy is the norm and they cannot be bothered to get involved in the political process. Most won't even bother to make a phone call or write a letter to their congressional representative. There is rampant corruption in our government and it is growing. And if you think things are bad now, just see how things are if we get a democrat in the White House with a democratic congress. You think oil is high now, just wait until we have to pay for national health care and some of these other pet socialist programs. Bush has faults, but he isn't the only one to blame. Strikes won't work. Innovation will help to solve the problem. We just need the national will to become independent of foreign oil suppliers. We can start by voting OUT everyone who is currently in office. Then vote them out before they get too comfortable and bring in new people. Don't give them time to become too corrupt. 8)

Just a thought here. Shoudn't the strike be to get the rates up instead of the fuel price down? Maybe GMAN can help me out here. How have the over-all rates kept up with the cost of running a truck ( excluding fuel ).

I did a little digging to get some labor rates. In 1987 a lift truck operator here made $7.28/hr. Today that same person is at 13.86/hr. If you throw in the "new" bennies that have come along in thet 20 year span ( matching 401k, stock purchase option, ect...) you can say ( to keep things simple ) that labor rates have doubled.

I guess you can see where I'm going with this. If the costs have doubled and the rates haven't, then we need to look at supply and demand.
