Truck Warranties

The warranty for the truck ends next month or most of it, and I'm thinking of buying an after market warranty.

I have been looking into National Truck Protection.

They charge $4,000 for the platinum plus I need to pay $500 to get it inspected before they will cover me. I can get it for $3,000 through the dealer. When I bought the truck I told him about this warranty and the salesman signed up as an authorized dealer and we agreed that when I reached the end of the factory warranty he would give it to me at cost (so he could close the deal). I don't mind paying the $500 to get the truck checked out as I will do it while I am still under factory warranty and will get whatever that needs to be fixed fixed (if there is anything). I did have it checked out when I bought it, but it's coming on six months later now.

Has anyone actually used this plan or know of any others? I was first made aware of it by the Kenworth dealer.

Many years ago, when I was in the auto repair buiz, many dealers would offer to sell you an out of coverage time extra warrantee....n I thought they were all rip-offs n think they still all are, better spent $ on preventive maitence and actual repair is my 2c

From what I hear they have come a long way from the old days (I am talking car warranties.) I have bought two of them in the last 5 years and have been very happy with both. One of them recently expired (100,000 miles) and they covered everything right up til the end. They did send an adjuster once to the dealer but I have kept that car well maintained and done all required mantenance so they never gave me a problem. This one particular company had some consumer complaints too but like I said they covered quite a bit over the years and never gave me a problem.

The other I have is through Allstate and just recently they paid about $700 for something in the transmission. They sent an adjuster too to the dealer but like I said I maintain my cars and don't give them an excuse to deny me and so far have never been denied.

Hmmm sounds like dealer propoganda to me to be honest......Yeah i heard the army now is the NEW army now too n they tell that to new hopefull recruits.
Bottom line is they sell em to make $ off of you is my 2c n just trying to change their well deserved bad image with BS like those were the old days.
I saw first hand then what scumbags these dealers were....i can tell you hooror stories about how the salesman would come to us mechanics n ask us to do anything to mickey mouse it just so he could cheat someone n make a sale.....so im suspect of anything a dealer advises.

You're probably right as far as the propaganda, but I think a lot of it now is they don't expect you to keep the car. I bought lifetime brake change (parts and labor) from TiresPlus and on my 3rd set of new brakes they got mad and told me they didn't expect me to keep the policy this long. I made them call the area manager and I got my brakes done and will be keeping this car for many years

I don't think most of those warranties are worth much. There are a lot of exclusions when you read the fine print. I would read everything very closely before buying such a warranty. Out of curiosity, what does it cover and for how long? How many miles do you have on your truck?

First thanks for replying GMAN. It would probably be easier if you just click the link in the original post and go through the website, but here are the things I copied for the Platinum plan. The first 12 months 100,000 miles cover even wear out issues and then the second 12 months cover manufacturer defect.

I have 365000 miles on the truck.

Where can you take your truck if it brakes down on the road? It won't do much good if you have to have it towed 1,000 miles. Can you take it to any dealer and if so, who pays the towing?

I just looked for an authorized inspection station in MA, NH, ME, VT, RI, NY and CT and found none at all.

Do not sell those aftermarket plans short at least on cars. I had my van eat both front hubs and that bill was 1500 bucks parts alone called unitized front hubs with ABS sensors in them. My warrenty cost me 1 grand and the repair my cost was 50 bucks. My parents got a reman tranny and engine for free for their car out of one of the same style companies and a whole bunch of other repairs also.

Is it $4K per year?

The first year sounds good but the second...if you blow a turbo or the tranny needs rebuilding, or oil analysis shows the engine starting to go: how would you prove it's a manufacturer defect vs wearing out?

I believe it's 4K for two years or actually $3,000. I don't know how to prove the other, good question.

Hey Steve I just called the warranty company. I asked where is the closest authorized inspection place in New England and they said Giants stadium in Jersey. They said it can be fixed in New England though.

I also asked about the wear out vs defect in 2nd year and he said things like the engine block and cam shaft don't wear out if they go it's usually always defect

usefull information. i would like to see if i can get an extended warranty on my truck. i try to take good care of my truck i pull oil samples every 12000 miles when I change the oil and knock on wood my samples are very consistant
