Adding Lights

What do you guys think about adding 2 of the old gumball style police lights? One blue and one red on the mirror brackets?

The lights would be in no way shape or form operational, I would pull all wiring, lightbulbs, ect out of them. Basicaly leaving an empty shell mounted on the mirror arm.

I was at the International Dealer today, getting some work done, the mechanic said to me that he thought with my rims painted black, chrome hub and lug nut covers, that it kind of looked like an old police car.

Well this has me thinking.....

I know the regulations for lights that are operational, but what about non-operating?

In my state any blue light on anything that is not a police car is illegal.

Um I should specify that I mean motor vehicles. If you want a blue light on your house go right ahead.

but technically it would not be a light, just a "shell". Mounted for decoration. Sorry "decoration" is not the word but I am lost as to which word I want to write.

Put yourself in the DOT, and any police officers shoes. What do you think they will do when they see that. Those lights aren't small and easily visable. How are they going to tell that they don't work, just driving by? Your going to be pulled over and asked if they work, and then still given a RIOT act about having them.

Do you want to explain to every curious DOT/highway patrol why they are there?

Did you realize that one thing like that could lead them to thinking what else can I find that might be non functional, or broke?

.......and if someones headlights (ie. mister law enforcement), hit those lights on your mirrors, they are going to reflect and appear like they are working. Of course you could always try one of those police fraternity stickers on your window. :wink: , or carry a monopoly get out of jail free card.

It will get you into too much trouble, and cause them to take a closer look at the rest of your truck.

I did see some blue dots for sale (already mounted in truck tail lights), at a Pilot the other day. They won't even let them slide on a car in Texas.

I would call your state DOT but as far as I'm concerned they would not be illegal in any way shape or form, just a piece of colored plastic. But, like I say, call the people who know and ask them.

It's not only your state DOT's interpretation of whether they are legal, it's all the others that you may travel through also who don't care what your state says.

I'm not sure that seeing those on a truck would make me think "old police car" anyway.

If you have a light on your truck, even if it is non-functioning, DOT considers it to be a light. For example, if you have extra lights above and beyond what are DOT required, and one of them is out, then you can be cited for that.

Thanks guys, the majority rules, I am bowing too the Masters, I think it was a good idea, but I see the points you all have raised.

You can have as many lights you want. As long as you have Amber towards the front, and Red towards the rear. Even though, I have seen some trucks with Amber lights on the back of the sleeper. As many lights as you may have, all have to be working.
