What is the weight difference between a pair of tandem steel and aluminum?
IIRC on average you can figure on about 20-40 pounds per wheel.Originally Posted by SteveBooth

I just swapped out 4 steel for aluminum, and lost 180 pounds.

Theres pro cons to each.
Obviously aluminum look better and they're lighter.
But they can crack. Especially older ones.
Steel ones generally last longer.

Now, to be specific, was that 2 sets of tandems that are really 4 wheels or was that 4 tandems and 8 wheels total?
Thanks for the info guys.
Make sure your mounting studs are long enough when you switch to aluminum wheels. The aluminum rims have a much thicker mounting surface than steel, so unless you have a lot of threads showing past the lugnut now, you will need to change out the studs for longer ones if you switch rims.
Now see...I plum forgot about the waistline!!!Originally Posted by SteveBooth

I had steel insiders on my tandems. To get rid of the extra weight I bought 4 new aluminums to replace them.

Oh, ok. So if I replaced all my wheels on my trailer I should save about 360 pounds or so. I lost that weight when I had my Rigmaster installed.
what is the name of the junk yard u purchase your wheels? a friend of mine is looking to switch from steel to aluminum wheels? also did u buy all 8 wheels for 600.00? was there any damage to the wheels?Originally Posted by jokerpop
thanks
Aluminum wheels are 60 pounds each, steel are 90 pounds.
10 wheels = 300 pound savings.
I bought 4 reconditioned (polished) wheels from a guy in Texas and then found out I could of got new from Youngstown Kenworth for just a little more.
When they recondition wheels they really remove allot of aluminum from the bolt hole edges and vent hole edges. I was not to thrilled with them.
Check with Youngstown KW before you buy used.
The $600 was for 4 wheels. That's 150 ea. I'll drive by the junk yard this week and get you the Ph #Originally Posted by nsxman2001

You could probably go south of the border and get great deals on aluminum wheels...
I can't even count how many trailers we've sent across the border with aluminum that come back with old rusty steel wheels. Some were brand, spanking new when dropped in Laredo.
