    HOW STRICT ARE THE SCALES?

You just need to have California on your cab card. The main concern with CA DOT is their kingpin law. They spend a lot of time enforcing it. I have never had any problems in California, but have had others to tell me that they have had some problems in the state. As long as you are courteous and respectful, you should not have any problems. They do like to see clean trucks, however.

One other thing about California is their lower posted speed limits. You can probably do about 62 and not have any problems in most areas, but their speed limit is 65. I have been doing 65 and had CHP pass and not give me a second look, but I would not count on it. If your truck is clean and looks neat they are not as likely to bother you.

Nothing to worry about-just be legal
Length law is 40' from King Pin to rear axle of your trailer. That's why you see Axles forward in CA.
If you have a 48' trailer no worries

I cruise at 58-62 in the right lane. Stay out of the hammer lane. Both the drivers at my barn who have gotten tickets lately we in the left lane.

I always give my truck a bath b4 going into that state. As gman said, clean, 40 feet, and 55 MPH. Also make sure you don't miss the agriculural check.

Some vans have the 40' kingpin marked on their trailers. If you want to measure it yourself, you need to measure from the kingpin to the center of your rear axle on a 53' trailer. You don't need to worry about it with a 48' trailer. On the 53' you will need to slide your tandems most of the way forward to be legal on the kingpin. You should be careful not to be overweight on the trailer when you move your tandems.

So, is it a ticket for speeding (eg. 60mph in a 55mph) while passing another slow vehicle or a ticket for impending traffic(eg. car speed limit is 70mph)? Or both? Is it possible to get a ticket for both?

Maybe it's don't move over a lane for someone to merge or for a disabled vehicle on the shoulder?

Or, is if cruising above the speed limit, then stay in the right lane? And this is okay?!?

I am sorry, what do you mean by your statement?
