It seems to be the same all over, seems it's not exclusive to any one area.

When you look at the cost of a dump truck these days, and the cost of running a dump truck, it's a dirty shame what you get paid for running one.

Yet the dump trucks are lined up at the gate every day, clamoring for the coolie wages.

    I don't understand it either.
If you can't shift it smoothly, you shouldn't be driving it.

I have been very lucky and things have been good for me. But I also don't "keep all my eggs in one basket" like so many do and end up starving because of it.

Earlier this year I got underbid on a job. No big deal, happens all the time. The customer (regular) offered me the work if I could beat the other companies price. But at less than a dollar a mile for a 150 mile round trip I would not, no could not, even start my truck for that. Yet he had 5 of his trucks hauling away at that price. He has since gone out of business.

If only I had a nickel for every dump truck that comes and goes inside of 6 months.

Why even work for that. That does not help the rates at all. My oldman will go as low as 70/hr and that if there is alot of sitting like digging curb out getting loaded witha backhoe. But 9 out of 10 times he gets 75/hr. He will never go below 70/hr. But hey your dad owns his trucks if he wants to work for 25/hr thats his call. Sooner or later it will catch up to him.

I guess the cost of living could be lower or there could be a flood of trucks in the market that force rates that low. But for my numbers I could not run that cheap, especially with a driver in the truck.

Just a random question for you my fellow dump truckers. What kind of minimums do you charge on hourly work? I offer 2 deals that the customer can choose from at the start of the day. One is a high rate with a 2 hour minimum and an hour of travel time after they are done with me. The other deal is a 10 hour minimum with a slightly lower per hour rate and I still add the hour of travel time.

Hey Mackman we only run our trucks for ourselves so we just figgure what it cost us to run them but if I was a O/O I wouldn't own a dump around here.

MDKW the cost of living is less here plus we pay more than anyone else in town here.
