Default Stay away from Navel Air Base loads

These loads are the loads from hell. My driver (husband) had a 7 am appt at the Navel Air Base in Norfolk, VA. He checked in at 1:25 am. Went over to the ship at 6 am to get unloaded and he is still there waiting to get unloaded along with the 1st truck driver. There was a total of 25 trucks, he was the 2nd truck there. All of the trucks had 7 am appts.
This is some BS and we will never do another military load because of this. Every truck driver there missed their next load and some missed 2 loads. There no telling what time he will get unloaded. I did get the broker to agree to detention time. The question is we will get paid for it. We've been stiffed twice before.

They've always been good pay for me. I get good detention pay when I sit. I've sat for 2 days in Texarkana waiting to get unloaded, but it was well worth my time.

It seems like from an O/O perspective a load that paid for detention could actually help you.

You are getting revenue to the truck without incurring variable costs (fuel, tires etc). As long as you are able to cover your fixed costs (truck payment, insurance, etc) you could come out ahead.

I picked up a load for a customer involved in a navy program. Took it from baltimore to a naval base about 260 miles away. My pick up appointment was 9AM. They finished loading me at 9:45 PM. The supervisor of the loading crew said we'll meet you there at 6AM tomorrow. After I stopped laughing I said how about 1:00. The unload time was about six hours as well. My company charges 75.00 per hour for detention and passes it to us 100% so take as long as you like its fine with me.

I have rarely had to wait very long when I have hauled loads for the military. Most of the time they have been pretty accommodating. The only problem I have experienced in recent years is the hassle entering some bases. It can sometimes take a little longer than I would like for them to run their check and do a search of the truck. For the most part, it isn't too bad.

We did get $600.00 for detention so it worked out this time.
