    Default Broker Pay

does anyone when calling a broker that youve never dealt with on a load board, do you ask for delay pay after 2 hours? and how often do they agree to it? Just wondering cuz i picked up load in laredo got there about 1pm and didnt leave til 10hours later,,, thanks!

This is the type of thing that should be negotiated before accepting the load. If it is not in the contract I would not hold your breath getting any extra pay out of a broker.
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.

You ask all questions about loading, unloading, and detention pay BEFORE you book the load.

Chances are the broker will not have anything in the contract about detention pay and if you ask to have it put in they will say they will get back to you. I'm pretty sure that's the last you will hear from them. Any detention money comes out of the brokers pay as they have already agreed on a price with the shipper.

Your best bet is to call the broker back when you hear from the shipper that you will be sitting a while. Then call the broker and tell them you want a new rate agreement faxed to you with detention put in or your leaving and looking for another load.

ok so does not picking up a load that you drivers agree to happen often? cuz i thought i was gonna have to call broker and tell him i couldnt take load i had previously booked due to problems with freight i currently had on my trailer, i mean is that a norm to call and cancel a load that you booked thru broker? so if when i was in laredo waiting i shouldve called broker and said looks like im gonna be here awhile, i need some detention pay?

I add my detention, TNU, tarping and payment terms into the confirmation before I fax in back. I'd say 8 times out of 10 they accept it.

Yep, that's what I do also. Trouble is, without any TNU details on the confirmation, the truck is kinda at the mercy of the broker....but we are anyway.

    NO.

Stuff happens. This is why brokers don't like to book a truck too far ahead.

    absolutely.

That's the very minimum you should ask, the question is if you gonna get it!

The last detention pay I collected was 500.00 for 9 hours. Had a 3:00Pm. appt. and got loaded at 2:00am. It should be around 50.00 an hour give or take.

None of them want to pay. How often or much they'll be willing to pay will often come down to their customer. If it's a customer that they know won't pay them for detention, they'll fight you tooth and nail. That's why it's always best to get something in writing. If you don't have it in writing, don't count on collecting it. If you do have it in writing, be willing to go the distance to enforce your contract.

I just got done dealing with an issue today. When you handle your business professionally and convey that you'll be willing to go to the mat, things have a way of working out.
