There's a whole rash of this stuff going on right now. If you're not thoroughly screening the brokers you use, you could find yourself hauling for free.

What is your "thoroughly screening" process?

check all their credentials, how long have they been in business, credit ratings, and scrutinize their documents and how they do business.

How do you check a credit rating about some company? I know if I want to check someone out, I use BBB and the attorney general's office.

There isn't much you can do to check out a broker other than some obvious things. If you call the BBB they will ONLY tell you he number of complaints and not the nature of the complaints.

I did check out a few of the listed people above and I would not have done business with them from the start. I have the credit check feature on ITS so I type in there broker number and I see all there accounts have been closed for some time. First signal. Some have an experience factor of either NONE or will not provide it. Second signal. Some have a poor performance factor and complaints against them which you can read. Third signal.

After I to take a load from a broker and they send me there packet I look them up on Google then find the actual company web page if they have one and make sure the phone number, address and fax number match the web page. If not, I call the company listed on the internet and ask about the broker. Usually I find out he's a remote office and he's ok.

Typing the name the company onto Google and other info can show blogs or other information that can raise a flag.

Keep in mind though. When a broker plans to go out of business they usually do it with a big bang from what I have learned. They broker out a ton of loads all at once before anyone catches on then run with all the money at once and is usually in excess of $40,000. They go out the door with a credit rating of A+ and that's the end. There isn't much you can do about that scenario.

There are a couple decent credit reporting company's, that you can use to check Brokers out. The biggest and best is Compunet, , which I just learned has been bought out, since last I used then (2 years ago). The other is an outfit, whom has a guy that post's regularly on the getloaded.com messageboard..I just can't remember that outfit's name.

Here is their new web address.

Yep, RTS. Personally, I think they're more on top of things than everybody else. From what it sounds like, they were the only ones on top of TEI. I'm pretty skeptical of newer small companies. I have a set of criteria they have to satisfy and even then I require different payment terms than I do with the more established companies. You can learn a lot just by the paperwork you get. I put quite a bit of stock in what the contract looks like. I like to see a company that has covered their butt without being one-sided. It speaks volumes about their business acumen.

    Also-
Do not trust references provided by a new broker. They may be legit, but quite often the contacts on the reference sheet and the broker are connected in some way.

And I will vouch for RTS. Great service - worth the money.
