Thread: DOT or State inspection...Not both

Default DOT or State inspection...Not both

I just went to the garage to get my truck inspected and was told I do not need to get a DOT inspection since NH has a state inspection which is the same criteria as the DOT inspection. I was showed the DOT regulations and they are correct. Any state that has a state inspection does not need a DOT inspection. They will do both if I want but it's twice the money and redundant. I was told I would basically be paying for a second sticker with no inspection.

    Anybody actually do this?

I have a local truck stop who has a DOT certified mechanic who does my inspections. It is a standard DOT inspection.

I think that reg includes a list of the states who's inspection satisfies the DOT requirement. CA requires quarterly inspections but as the owner you're allowed to do them yourself. We still have to get a DOT annual but it counts as one of our quarterlies.

Texas has the same system as NH Steve. The truck I just bought had a Texas State inspection sticker on the winshield, when I picked it up. Stopped at the local DOT shop here, and they told me that the Texas CMV inspection is the sdame as a Fed DOT inspection. Have been thropugh several states the last 2 month's, and 2 inspections...no problems with just the Texas sticker.

You can get an inspection anywhere that they are DOT certified. Most TA's and other truck stops can inspect your equipment.

Virginia is another one of those states. I had lots of DOT cops in other states ask me where my DOT inspection sticker was, and I said "It's on the windshield." I never had anyone refuse to take that for an answer, and we never had one of those DOT inspection stickers on any truck unless it came in that way used, and the sticker was still good.

Texas has two inspection stickers, only one is DOT approved. Yes, it says Texas on it but it is a Texas DOT sticker. If it is square, it is not the DOT one.

Yup...found that out when I took the tractor in to get the DOT annual sticker done as a pre-lease deal. The shop in Beaumont that I took the tractor to to get DOT'ed, told me I already had it, when I bought the truck..and they explained how the TEXAS CMV Inspection worked. I am used to the white label other states use..that say DOT Annual on them.
